1098 Day One Ownership

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Rainman, May 14, 2026.

  1. I've just purchased a pristine 2008 1098S with extremely low miles which has evidently never turned a wheel in the wet. For all intents and purposes, it's like a new bike.

I plan to install a lithium battery (Skyrich) having now put them on so many bikes but reading on here that an uprated and/or relocated reg/req (Shendengen MOSFET) seems to be a preferred course of action.

This bike isn't my only bike and it will only ever get used on high days and holidays and never in the rain, much like it's life to date. So am I overthinking this and should I just get on a use it, or should I really be looking to get the potential charging circuit issues addressed ahead of time?

  2. My 2p...
I would start riding your new fantastic bike. And, I would start the process of looking for a new MOSFET reg and possibly even a new bracket to move it to the right side of the bike in better ventilation.
I have had several 848's with no regulator problems, even in the heat of the Santa Monica mountains and Willow Springs in Los Angeles. Maybe the 1098 runs hotter and I have heard so many stories about cooked regulators. I changed mine to MOSFET a few months ago but kept it in the original location. Where I have had many issues is the three wire plug that connects the reg to the alternator. Oil will get inside the wires and siphon to the plug where it will attract all kinds of grime and eventually short out. I just solder the wires now and have had no problems. (probably just jinxed myself...)
    Have fun!

  3. Congratulations.

Personally I’d ride it and address potential gremlins as you go.

Exact start cables are a good idea too :upyeah:
