Right I meant to be off to the TT early hours Wednesday for a day trip only my clutch has gone on the way home today. Clutch lever has gone rock hard will not budge a millimeter. Need to get this fixed ASAP. Any ideas? Im sure the same happened to my 748 years ago and it was either a slave cylinder or push rod cant remember. How do I diagnose this pls?
Unless the piston has been extended so far in its cylinder it can no longer move outwards. If that is the case try pushing it back home, but first remove the clutch m/c reservoir filler cap and suck out the fluid therein. You need to have space for the fluid the piston will displace to move back up into the reservoir.
So slave cylinder off and still no movement at the lever at all. I assume its either master cylinder or more likely slave cylinder needs replacing?
Taken the hydraulic line completely off the slave now and lever moves. Thinking knackered slave cylinder? Just need to find one on a bank holiday weekend lol
Are you sure it wasn't just the master return port closed. It can happen with a wrongly adjusted lever in particular with some aftermarket levers. Does the slave push back in now that you have taken the line off. If it does it's more likely to be what I said.
Fitted a second hand slave cylinder (the only one I could get at short notice) exactly the same rock hard lever no movement. Have I been unlucky and got another broken slave cylinder?? Or something else. The lever moves fine when I bleed it but then goes rock hard. When I unbolt the slave from the bike and try to pump the lever its rock hard with no movement still aaaagggh!
have you checked to see if this is mechanical - e.g. pushrod seizing/struggling to move? You can try:- Slacken off 3 clutch slave fixing screws 2 turns* and watch what happens when handlebar lever pulled. Is lever still solid/no movement but slave stays "sloppy" on fixings or does lever move and slave become rigid/moved outward? * be careful as threads can be damaged - alternatively use 3 longer screws.
So firstly I was checking the slave in the wrong place, it works fine. The issue is the clutch centre nut has come completely undone and fell off. I thought it was going to be a case of just screw it back on and all is well. However I screwed it back on and lever is still solid. Think I need to take the basket and plates apart and check for damage.
Happened to me with a 916 & a 999 ! Undo the centre nut again, And pull the basket forward turn it clockwise or anti clockwise till it aligns on the teeth at the back. They is a clutch basket locking tool which isn’t expensive About £13 as I remember The nut is designed to be very tight.
You're going to have to strip the plates out to make sure everything is seated correctly before you tighten the nut back up. Have you got a proper strong clutch tool because that nut is f*****g tight mate so you don't want to be damaging the hub and/or basket while you're holding it. Good luck.
For anyone with the same issues I finally sorted this! The central clutch hub nut had worked loose and dropped off. The end steel then dropped a bit jamming the clutch pack. Seems this is a known issue as there is no physical restraint of the nut? Hopefully this helps someone else out.
