Fugly Fuel Leak From Tank Unit

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by finm, May 22, 2026.

  1. So, not only did it start raining the Day after i Taxed the Bike, i now have an excessive fuel leak coming from the Pump seal. there was a bit of talk about these leaking back in the day when all the cool kids had Fugly's. if i recall correctly, there was a fix for this using a thicker? seal.
My question is, where can i get one?

  2. Sorry to read this - a man of your skills will solve it without any need to search out what was a controversial cure anyway. (i.e. the magic aftermarket tank modification)
for what it's worth - i've had/seen slight distortion of the tank at the pump assy mounting face on two of my Uglies but can't remember how i cured the leak if an "O" ring type..

  3. i know we had the unit out many moons ago when we were diagnosing a starting fault, it always had a wiff of fuel afterwards but no leak as such. just very slight staining around the unit. i cant remember how the seal looked. ie, was it a large O ring or a flat rubber gasket. looking online, a replacement is just a large O ring. is that correct?

  4. Rusty on this now, will have to look at the parts drawing, were there two designs?

  5. You are right, so scrap the "double" gasket if yours is as below.

  6. maybe I did get a second one and cut the flange off? You also know as well as I do, the leak is always between the fixings on the perimeter isn't it? And sometimes people have over tightened and that's the reason.

  7. nice one Chris. i'll get it cleaned down and take a look. :upyeah:

  8. Do the tanks on these suffer as did the Aprilia Tuono from swelling tanks or are they steel.

  9. they are our favourite material.. PA6 by Acerbis. Because it's such a long moulding, it can easily grow 10mm in length, and it's std practice to massage the rear subframe crossmember rearwards so the unit clears the petrol pump flange (you've already removed the errant fixing!) on removal.

  10. Ah ok, mate had a Tuono that had a completely dodged repair on his he just about managed to seal it with sealant then quickly sold the problem on.

  11. Anyone whoever worked on any of the little BMC engines, often with a green rocker cover and the cork gasket (we will never see these again!*), will remember the knack on how to seal it (the rocker cover) without leaks, similar scenario to the Ugly flange above.

*in the same "real" cork material.

  13. Had exactly same problem with my old numpty, tank flange had distorted causing a leak.
Bought a small sheet of 2mm Viton and made a new gasket - problem fixed!
