696 Monster Intermittent Problem

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Pauldonjuan, Apr 1, 2026.

  1. Hey, I’m asking for some help to diagnose this issue.
It’s a 2012 696 Monster, it will start to misfire on both cylinders or cut out totally, it’s ridden regularly, this can happen randomly every week, 2 weeks or 2 months. I’m sure it’s a fuelling issue as checked for a spark immediately after it cut out and was sparking. Leave the bike for 5 minutes ant it’ll start and run perfectly again. It usually cuts out after being stuck in slow traffic for 10 minutes or so, out the traffic and open her up and that’s the time it’s likely to cut out. It can be hot or cold weather conditions.
I have had the following error codes.
PO482 exhaust valve end position adjustment
PO171 vertical cylinder lambda control signal too high.

This model doesn’t have the valve in the exhaust system,
I tried replacing the lambda sensor. I’ve tested the little inlet air temp sensor, that seems good. I’ve replaced the fuel pump.
I’ve since had error codes for vertical and horizontal lambda sensors.
It’s a well looked after bike and everything looks good.
Any help getting to the root of this issue will be greatly received.

  2. P0482 = cooling fan error

P0171 - check to see if you have a joint leak on the exhaust system

  3. Hey thanks for the reply. yes I had seen PO482 can also refer to a cooling fan. The bike is air cooled and has no fan.
these codes probably are pointing to something it’s just beyond me to make heads or tails of them :astonished:

  4. Could be a phantom code. Has the bike repeatedly failed to start. Does P0482 come back if the code is cleared?

  5. Yes code has come back. the bike starts and runs perfectly except for when it’s issue happens and stops, literally 5 minutes later it’s perfect again. I’ve puzzled over it and checked everything I can think of for the last 9 months!

  6. Might be a curve ball, but the Monsters of that era can suffer with loose battery terminals that cause all sorts of random issues with errors, starting, screen shutdown...... worth a check.
The battery sits across the frame and isn't that secure. Accelerating and braking cause the battery to rock and this can loosen the terminal screws on the battery.

  7. Thanks for the ideas. I’ll have the bike here again this week for valve clearances and belts. I’ll check all the connections I can find and maybe replace the relays for good luck :upyeah:

  8. An update
Full service done and while it was all apart I checked every wire, connection and earth I could find.
The bike has run flawless for the last 500 ish miles. Yesterday my partner was riding it, faultless again all weekend until the last 50 miles, very specific riding conditions again, low gear slow constant speed in traffic for a few miles, accelerating away and the bike cut out totally, she stopped, waited 5 minutes and it starts and runs perfectly again.
    Error codes as before
PO482 exhaust valve end position adjustment
PO171 vertical cylinder lambda control signal too high.

This only happens in specific riding conditions, it’s happened in hot and cold temperatures.

Any help getting to the root of this issue is greatly received.
    Cheers.

  9. Still having a problem with this bike, it decided to cut out with no warning yesterday on a 40 mile ride. It’s definitely gone worse in the hot hot weather and getting stuck in traffic.
My next approach is to just start replacing parts and hopefully I’ll swap out what is failing.
Deciding where to start, I have replaced the fuel pump & filter, thinking I’ll replace the fuel regulator next… anyone suggest a suitable replacement?
    Cheers.

  10. I would change the CPS for that fault, sounds like 2 Ducatis I've had that did the random cut out.
Try and find a 2nd hand one or borrow one rather than buying a new one.

  11. I had an 1198 that randomly cut out, turned out to be the ignition switch, there was a slight play in it turning the key, when it cut out screen went dead

  12. Thanks for the ideas, cps is first to be replaced :upyeah:

  13. An update on this bike.
New genuine CPS fitted, running flawless for a few hundred miles. Out today and +30c we did 100 miles thru the lakes
, ran perfect, coming home 20 miles down the motorway at a steady 70 and it just cut out totally with no warning, managed to get it started just long enough to exit motorway an it conked out totally, got it home in a van…
Once home it’s running perfect again :scream:
Something is breaking down with heat me thinks. Anyone suggest what this may be? I’m running out of ideas as I’ve checked and replaced lots now.
    Cheers.

  14. Coils breaking down, get hot fail then cool and work again. I’ve had it happen on a bike I once owned.

  15. First check and clean all earths. You really need to test electrical items as it happens resistance usually goes up with temperature. Id suggest doing this on a dyno to get heat saturation.
It’s the only way to replicate the fault with tools to hand.

  16. Gone due to my monthly chat delete routine

  17. Is the vertical cylinder lambda on a shared canbus line?

  18. As said above check all electrical connections. Even the battery. They can do strange things with H/R's . Dirty connections etc. Take it from there.
