Still looking at bike listings and came across this ST4 https://www.cars.bg/offer/66ab11b2dd4d97997d00b3d2 Was wondering what may have caused it and how much it would cost to put right notice it is also missing a handlebar end bung otherwise does not look bad. The ST2 have been thinking of going to look at is in the same town. Opinions? Plezier
Bung would not be much. Mileage and if the shims have been set up is the big cost. Belts is a fairly easy job. BTW this is an ST4s
OK I know nothing about the ST's really just did a little web surfing and discovered that the ST4S is a slightly more powerful version of the ST4. There is no mention of any tour pack with it so would need to ask will also have to ask if anyone in this area can service the valves not sure that I can do it or not. Now not sure what you mean by "Bung"? What I am wondering is can that tank be just stripped back and re-painted? Or would we be looking for a replacement not sure if it's steel or plastic I know the Monsters had issues with the plastic tanks. Plezier
Sorry have no idea but I was wondering about that came here to ask as liked the look of them but no little to nothing about them as yet. Only Ducati I have owned is the Monster 620ie. Plezier
Just doing some more web research and it seems that it's possibly brake fluid splashed from the clutch reservoir seems this is known according to what just read of course judging from the photos is no ideal but it might jest be correctable with a proper prep and repaint. Now just need to see if can arrange to go and look at them. Plezier
Agreed on the poor prep and respray, then one must ask why was it resprayed? @OP the bung is the handlebar end weight, it's what you called it first Nope they retained the steelies Yes the S model is a 996 motor, Öhlins rear shocker with hydraulically adjustable preload, fully adjustable Showa forks with TiN coated stanchions.
Cheers @Neil66, that leaves poor paint prep (as stated) - why? Or internal corrosion causing micro pores - possibly linked to ethanol/water. A new red tank (if available) 58610601AA is nearly £2K That gives a big bartering tool on the bike’s price.
Check inside the tank, if it’s really rusty it may have become porous causing the blistering or it could be just a bad paint job with moisture trapped under the paint.
That is if the cause is poor paint prep. If the cause is corrosion then internal sealing of the tank will be required. That does not guarantee fixing the porosity of the tank.
Indeed until I can go and have a look at it it's all just guess work it's no good asking the dealer in most cases as I have found out to my cost that dealers in used bikes and cars do not understand what telling the truth is! I have found and dealt with one that does tell it as it is but he is a small time one that only has one or two bikes at a time for sale it's who I bought my Triumph Trophy from he has a 620 Multistrada listed at the moment he is closer only just over an hours drive unlike where these ST's are which is 3 1/2 hours drive. There are three routes to get there from here one is mainly main roads and dual carriage way with a bit of like Motorway the other two are more scenic and one goes through the edge of a mountain range with lots of hills and twists and bends including hair pins. Have been through on a bus once that route takes closer to 4 hours. Plezier
Nah I don’t think that’s internal corrosion - that manifests usually in the nether regions of the tank. My vote is still a crappy paint job - or water splashes if it’s just been washed
If corrosion is bad enough to rot through the steel from the inside to the outside then a replacement tank is required. I would guess poor paint prep as others have already said. The question then is why has the tank needed a respray. Likely a replacement for a rusted one or a damaged one and it was a different colour. If it was for a damaged tank then i would be looking closely for other signs and effects of whatever caused the damage.
Somehow I do not think it's rust inside the tank and I know what that looks like as my 620 Monster had that took me a week or so to sort that with out lining the tank. Going to try phoning them today and see if I can catch someone who speaks English. Plezier Just phoned the seller us as I suspected he does not speak English so have tried a message on Viber that can be translated so now we wait and see if we get a response. Also phoned the dealers that have the ST2 listed the one with the bike have no one who speaks English but their Sofia branch does have at least one English speaker who said he would act as translator. The ST2 also has the tour pack well panniers at least and has lower recorded mileage if it's to be believed. Hopefully they might have some history with it that may prove it or not and if it's been serviced or not. Plezier
My tank was rusty inside at the top, where it had been left without petrol to that level. Just surface stuff. I used a tank sealer. it was a bit mewssy and you need twice as much as you think.
