Hi , been on the forum for a while but this is my first post. I am a 66 year old , and I have an 2015 R1 Superstock and an Aprilia factor 2005 . Unfortunately my health has been great of late fighting oral cancer . But if able I would still like to ride my bikes above ,especially the R1 on trackday in Spain . But I want something that ne and my partner can go touring on , i guess everyone has to accept their age in the end . My friend has a lovely 1200s 2012 that i can have first refusal, and he's rebuilt the rear hub so d now working on the gearbox . The man is a wonderful engineer, and I was a former toolmaker by trade ,so his work is absolutely brilliant . Which one should I buy ,my heart wants the 2012 , but i font need the speed and its for a different purpose. Would the members help me to make my mind up , the DVT appeals to me as much as the 2012 . I want someone on here to help me make a the best choice. The cruise control, the abs appeals to me so does the the roar power of the 2012 . There's a couple of thousand between the two maybe more . What would I enjoy more , I don't need a sports bike performance although for a touring bike they have plenty. Is the later suspension as good or better the the Ohlins on the earlier bikes . I have seen a 2015 to 16 for around 7.6k to 6.k , the prices one has only done 6.5 k miles . Am I asking the wrong questions, which one should I buy . My friend has an African Twin DCT , but for me that would be too much, although I can understand the concept and the ease . But I want something that feel real i hope that majes sense . Any advice for my first Ducati would be greatly appreciated. T.I.A.

Personally I would say the DVT bikes are a better option. The engine is more responsive at low revs and things like skyhook and cruise control make life a lot easier
The first gen single spark Multi is very aggressive in power delivery, also has poor fuel consumption. I tried touring with my son on mine and it was horrid! Front end constantly coming up even in 3rd gear, i changed to a BMW GS which suited me better for touring 2 up. The later bike with refined power delivery and cruise control would be my choice .
That’s a close choice IMO, the earlier bike is definitely a bit more raw and great fun when pushing on. For Touring the DVT is probably an easier bike to ride with a smoother power delivery, the lower mileage bike would appeal to me more, but make sure service history is good and all Ducati software updates have been done. If budget allows I would push to get a 1260, for me that was the biggest improvement over the 1200’s
Could you somehow get a ride on each one? I decided my next bike will be a Multi...so following with interest. Admittedly I had kinda focused on the 1200 as I'm a hooligan at heart.
I’ve got a 2024 1200GT so sort of between your two options. Although it has the Skyhook suspension I very rarely change the settings and live in fear of it one day going wrong and would prefer the non skyhook version! That aside, I think it’s a great bike, I’ve toured on it and certainly didn’t find it too raw or raucous. It can be that if you put it in Sport mode and ride it that way but it was quite civilised on my run to Germany last year. I could have had a 1200DVT or 1260 I suppose, but I don’t feel like I want to upgrade to either, they seem a bit flabby to me and I prefer the look of the 1200. And if your buyer has looked after it well and you know it’s history that’s worth a lot too.
IMO if you aren’t long in the leg and burly I would look for something else. I,m 68 on a 1200 and starting to be put of by its weight when manoeuvring and seat height when getting of it. Would at least try to get a test ride. Good luck.
I would like to thank everyone for their replies and they have been a wonderful insight to the bikes . Raw power is not a problem, and if i road tested both my heart would go for the earlier bike . My Superstock R1 has 200bhp at the back wheel depending on the velocitystacks i run , and the hooligan in me loves it is even though totally usable on the road not that with average speed cameras on the road, and if I wanted a thrill I always have that . I loved all the replies, and was not expecting any really, but when I crashed at Almeria, Jamie a lad riding a Ducati twin helped me so much and even helped me when i was buying some PSI leathers too . So i had no reason to be nervous about posting for the first time . The 2015 DVT sounds the one for me , cruise control don't sound much but my friend complained about it when he bought the SP1 and the 2 , I had a chance to ride SP1 bike on track ,but with the expense involved and with original faring , no. I think the the 2015 ,will be a great suit me best . I love twins too ,my 2015 R1 sounds like twin sometimes too. The only other question please , can I convert it to race shift ? Not for any reason ,it's just i been riding it for so long , the only bike I don't make a mistake is on a supermoto ,strange. When i ride my friend's bike . Perhaps it's do different i remember and the Multistrada will be the same . Thanks again everyone .
I have had nearly every iteration of the 1200 Multi. Th 200-2012 was a good first stab, but as mentioned it was raw and a little unsophisticated. The 1200 twin spark - the first model with skyhook - was fantastic. The motor was refined and the skyhook an eye opener. A great engine and riding with a suspension guru always with you is amazing. The 1200 DVT appealed as it was more refinement, but it disappointed me. Whilst it was very smooth at low revs, and had good fuel consumption it also had a flat spot in the middle of the torque curve which wasn't present in the earlier versions. It felt similar to turbo lag, and I sent time and money trying to get rid of it. I now have a 1260 which has the best of every model - punchy engine, Skyhook has evolved, LED lights, decent heated grips (the DVT's were weak). To answer your question, I think the DVT would suit you better than the early 1200, but if you can get a 1260 that would be better still.
Hi everyone, I missed out on a bargain, a 2013 with just over 6,000K and Ohlin forks ,same owner for eight years £4.5 with the desmo service just done, my heart would have bought it , which has got me in a lot of trouble in the past . It had a nice Ducati cover a Ducati stand . It was an absolute bargain in Maidstone. In a way ,I am very disappointed, but there's a DVT that I may buy . If I didn't have the R1 or the Aprilia twin factory maybe . It sold the same day I saw it ,with a full service history. There's a lot of people here that have mentioned the DVT , and I must not forget that i would like to ride with a pillion ,the DVT is the better bike for that . Also the earlier bike being lighter and faster handling , I would be be a hooligan with it even if I said I wouldn't, it would be so tempting. I wish the DVT had not put some weight on , the 1260 rake angle looks to shallow. But hey what do I know , I like the autoblip on it , but ridden two strokes virtually till I ended racing so not a problem, I could stick a quick shifter on it . The cruise control, which I have never ridden with, sounds appealing too. I think the DVT would be good compromise for me and i could probably get the flat spot taken out at Track Electronics with John . Compromise is probably the wrong word, probably more suited. That 1200 was immaculate and with that millage it was a bargain. I may still have a look at a 1260 , this is getting more confusing . If I ever need a thrill I have the flat plane crank that sounds like nothing else . My late childhood friend loved Ducatis ,he have the first 916 and 998 SPS , he also has a RGB race bike a mark 7 , the most explosive thing i have ever ridden. Picture of my R1 below. Thank again everyone, I will end up with one of the above. I would like steering damper fitted under the yolks ,so it don't interfere with the tank bag . Does anyone have one on here?
I’ve had both and loved the 2011S I had better then the later Nikes for comfort by some margin and preferred the handling over the later bikes , found it much sportier
I've had a 2017 1200s DVT from new, once you personalise them you'll be great, I have narrower bars, Puig sport screen, comfort seat, a couple of engine guards. I have toured on it, in and out of London, ridden all year round, green lanes, it's so capable, love it.
Thanks Mike , I missed out on a 1200s DVT with 6000 miles . To tell the truth , I am really thinking of getting a 22 Pikes Peak . I never had a Ducati , and I really wanted a twin , but at the same time I love the look of the 22 bike . It's a lot of money, but I have lost a lot of time and I might have to wait 3 months till i could buy it . There's probably no comparison, and I realise that . But I think from the bikes I got it would suit me better . But I will keep looking for a DVT with low mileage. My worst problem is patience at times , maybe just wait till i can get the PP . My illnesses doesn't help , I love the look of the 22 PP and it has autoblip ,plus loads more but twice the price , will it give me twice the smile ? I don't know , riding bikes is absolute freedom ,unfortunately you have to go abroad to enjoy it ,as they have roads I guess i will have to see if I have the patience . I have had to learn that ,so maybe . I am grateful to everyone for their replies, if anyone is thinking of selling a low mileage 1200s DVT ,please message me , Thanks .
Totally agree here, had a 1200s 2022 skyhook and just lived that engine, tried 1200 DVT which bored me to death and it had a huge whole in the middle of the Rev range. They called it progress.
