Been trying to find a 520 Steel 40t rear sprocket, only been able to find aluminium ones. Does anyone know are these available or aluminium is the only option? Regards Phil,
Any particular reason you want steel? If for strength, have you looked at Supersprox? - aluminium centre with steel tooth ring so strong like steel but lighter. I've got one on my Monster as it munched through a Renthal aluminium in no time, I think they make them for 748/919 etc. That said I've got Renthal aluminium on the 916 and it's lasted well.
More for longevity, reading the aluminium ones are more for racing and don't last as long or this not the casse? I have purchased a replacement full set 14/38, but on reading alot suggest 14/40 as a better setup, so before I set the chain length. I was looking at the options available. No need for quick change setup etc for me.
No, standard carrier on the bike with 38t and another carrier with 38t that came as a spare with the bike. Both appear in good order, but am going to replace as a set.
Just noticed the new 38t steel sprocket that came as kit, appears that it needs a carrier when I've just compared it to the spare I have.
My memory may be hazy as I haven’t had a 748/996 for 20+ years but can one buy a ‘one piece’ 40t sprocket? Back in the day one had to install a Renthal/STM type carrier and fit their sprockets (which came in a range of sizes).
748 with 14 tooth front sprocket? Long time ago on a bike I owned I changed the rear sprocket to 41 teeth. 2.92 ratio , it worked quite well. Renthal carrier as mentioned above.
I have a 15/39 on the 916 which I think is ideal though 748 has different primary gearing and is more revvy so will likely want want something shorter. But Renthal alloy rear lasts well on mine, been on for years and a good few miles with no significant wear and easy to replace with the quick-change carrier that also prevents the cush drive backing out and knackering your eccentric hub (as mine did). Mine is a 525 though so a bit stronger than a 520. I liked the Renthal setup so much that I bought a Renthal alloy rear sprocket for the Monster albeit in 520 setup but it munched through it in a year - but there's something about that bike that gets through consumables as if they were, well consumable; tyres, chains, sprockets, even gearboxes at easily double the rate that the 916 does despite having less power and being lighter.
I'm assuming going to 525 instead or the standard 520 would be also be a better option, Whilst replacing everything?
I ran a 520 on my 748 and 916SPS for years with STM carrier and ally sprocket. Never had any bother with excessive wear. I have a 520 on my M1100S with Renthal carrier and ally sprocket. Ditto no bother.
@Phil-748 Maybe you already know www.gearingcommander.com Really good for working it all possible ratios/chain lengths/spocket wear...
Don’t think I’ve ever seen anything but 36 and 38 in standard carrier fitment. For anything else, you’ll need a quick release carrier setup as mentioned and that means alloy rear sprocket. 14t is stock front, so 40 or 41 rear works nicely. Renthal has been difficult to source in the last few years. I’d suggest looking at Afam as an option. Generally, you’ll need to stick with the same make of carrier and sprocket. They don’t often mix. I’d stay with 520 chain. The 748 doesn’t need 525.
For Renthal in the 520, I can find all, but not in 40t & 41t size sprockets. However I can find all sprocket sizes in the 525. I read another post on here that JT & Renthal are interchangeable?
