1999 Tourer Ducati St2 1000

  1. Thinking of going to look at this Ducati Sport Tourer 1000 it's a 99 with 34,520km on clock assuming it has not been clocked that is. Yes that is a problem it seems here. It would be a replacement for the Triumph Trophy assuming the guy actually comes up with the money.

My concerns are that is might be a little too tall in seat height meaning that I would have the same problems as the Triumph although the ST2 is a little lighter the other thing is the cost here in Bulgaria of parts like cam belts but that can be mitigated by buying online from say the UK and just waiting for delivery.

Now is there anything I need to look out for apart from the liquid cooling that I would not have come across on the Monster 620?

  2. ST2 s are great. Really practical bike. Given that they are dirt cheap, they represent a very low-budget entry to Ducati ownership. Go for it.

  3. And you only have to ask a recent ST2 purchaser:grinning:

  4. Well am not exactly new to Ducati ownership having owned the Monster 620ie for a couple of years only listed it for sale as found it uncomfortable for anything but for short distances which is why I got the Triumph Trophy 900. Then of course a nice truck driver turned left on me when I was passing it Monster 620 is wrecked I am slowly recovering. The 620 was fun to ride for short trips but have to admit that never felt happy with it's handling not sure why but the Triumph suits my riding style much better am hoping that the ST2 will be better suited to me it's for longer rides I once did a 400km ride on the 620 and it almost crippled me took a couple of days to get over that one which is when I bought the Triumph.

I am retired so on a fixed income (old age pension) so not able to spends loads on my bikes in the mean time I bought a 98 Honda Shadow VT600 as it's lighter and a lot lower meaning it's far easier for me to manage while recovery continues and hopefully can now rebuild my strength on my right side and especially the upper arm and shoulder.

  5. I'm 5'10" and find the ST2 in standard guise very comfortable. I returned to bikes after 40 years and did find the power and liveliness a bit daunting at first but never felt it was too tall. It's heavier than anything I've had before although I was a lot younger then so difficult to really compare. When I bought mine in September I had it given the once over and it was not cheap but knowing that everything was as it should have been was comforting to know. I was told that it needs to be ridden and I'm trying to do as much as I can but certainly haven't ventured more than 100 miles so far. I recently posted that I felt the wind pressure was more than I had anticipated being that it is a tourer; once again, probably an age thing and not being used to it yet. It's a beautiful bike and sounds fantastic. Pete 1950 also told me it was a cheap bike and that I had paid far to much for it but I don't really understand why this should be the case. You could spend £20K on a bike that is only worth £15K a year later so what's the difference between spending £3K on a bike and adding another £1.5K making it nice.
    Enjoy my friend.

  6. As yet have not contacted the dealer due to the language problem Bulgarian is a nightmare to learn so need someone to possibly translate for me.

I returned to riding in April 2024 when I bought the Monster 620ie after a 25 years or so of not riding last bike before this was a streetfighter I built around a Honda FB750 DOHC unit in a hard tail frame then in June 2025 bought the Triumph Trophy 900

First faired bike have ever had and was surprised how much I like it. I was not intending to sell but this chap was insistant and I said a price that I thought was too high he haggled a little and we came to an agreement of a price which is almost twice what I paid for it. What convinced me it that I actually dropped it whilst turning it around at a junction due the the camber of the road and a bit of loose grit my left foot slide away a bit and the bike lent over just too much and I could not get it back so down we went. I am not as strong as I used to be nor as I should be during the collision on the Ducati my right side slammed into the rear side of a cement mixer trucks rear wheels that turned left across my path as I was the passing it. Snapped the right humerus clean banged up the right knee crushed the tip on the right little finger and did a lot of nerve damage to the right knee and shoulder and upper chest. Was knocked unconscious and was out for a while they have pinned the humerus and it's proving slow to heal it's been 8 months now doctors say it will most likely be a year before it heals maybe a bit longer at my 6 month check up only one side of the break had fused together going back in July for next follow up.

So once surgeon said I could ride again bought a Honda Shadow VT600 to ride as it's lower and lighter and I love the style the ST2 would be for longer rides out to explore the countryside there are mountains that have nice roads and wonderful scenery the Shadow is OK for the more local ones but it has limited range. Thus why am looking for another sports tourer.

  7. If things work out as I hope this weekend will be going down to Plovdiv where the ST2 is will hopefully be meeting up with a Bulgarian friend and having a look at this and a Honda VFR trying to decide if I should take the Triumph or the car depending on route the one almost all main roads is 257km the one that is more scenic with plenty of twisty bits that cuts through the edge of some mountains is 211km but takes according to google maps 3 1/2 hrs about 1/4 hr longer than the longer main road route a third route takes nearly 4 hrs and has loads of twisty bits and hair pins along the side of a gorge. There s a chance of rain Saturday as well possibility of Thunderstorms not good for the bike.
