Has Anyone Ever Retrofitted Abs? Specifically To An St4s

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Desmoboy, Jun 12, 2026.

  1. As per the title really, I dont really want to go back to riding a bike without ABS, particularly when i have the wife on the pillion.
But i have seen a clean ST4S that i quite fancy and it does not have ABS as standard. As you can imagine, the pool of good ST4 models is small and dwindling.

  2. Of course, in theory. But as i said the pool of good ones is small.

  3. I wasn't aware the the 4S came without ABS. I can't remember specifying ABS back in 2002 when I bought mine. Is it possible the wiring looms were identical for both models so it would only be a pump and sensors you'd need ? Andy

  4. My 2001 ST4S did not have ABS

Fitting is more complex. More than just a pump and sensors.

  5. Buy the non ABS and I'll swap ya, coz I'm considering removing mine haha :=)

  6. When you say abs how do you mean something from early 2000s or modern stuff? The development is massive.

you only have to count the number of pick up points for the hall sensor to know what you are getting. In the 2000s the front wheel had 6 or sometimes 8 .. that’s new wheel speed information every 60 degrees of rotation. Look at a panigale front pick up now in the range of 60 or so, new information every 6 degrees of rotation that’s a modern abs! And totally incompatible with just fitting a pump and some leads
Of course anything is possible but not realistic !

buy a similar bike with an agricultural system is a wzz aste of time. If you value your pillion that much buy a newer bike With modern tech abs cornering abs split braking combined braking anti slide wheelie control yadda yadda…

  7. I had a 2003 model ST4s ABS. There are substantial changes to the wiring loom, although most of them could be achieved by modifying a standard loom. I believe the ECU is different but I think it would work fine with a standard ECU. It also has the ABS warning light built into the revcounter and of course you'd need to find an ABS unit.

  8. Or possibly 48, which is what they actually have.

I do value my pillion, but i also value what i ride and i prefer the ST4S to a Multistrada for long distance riding at pace. I have no illusions that retrofit will be easy. That was not the question, i asked if anyone had done it.

I really doubt that Ducati made a different display for the ABS and non ABS bikes. Same for the ECU.

  9. It is very definitely a different display. The ECU is basically the same but with different software, I can't remember what the difference was.

  10. In fact the same across both versions, so no issue here

  11. I think Derek is correct regarding the ECU not being part of the ABS system

If you search the JPDiag database for ST4S ABS you find the same maps are used on the non-ABS bikes.

  12. The part number for the ECU of the 2003 ABS bike is 286.4.060.1A whereas that for the non-ABS bike is 286.4.034.1A. So there must be some difference.
Yet the part numbers given for the revcounters of both ABS and non-ABS is the same, although the ABS version has warning light and the non-ABS one doesn't!

  13. Derek i think you are not correct on either point. The display is the same. The ABS light is built into the bottom right corner of the Rev counter. It is either brought into use via the wiring connectivity or it is not dependant on model variant.
The ECU is the same. The Bosch ABS pump has a built in controller, there is no logic between the 2 Pieces of electronics. The ABS is in fact ( apart from wiring loom inter connectivity) totally separate from the main ECU control of the rest of the bike.

  14. I am looking at the 2005 version of the ST4S variants only. I have no interest in the earlier bike. Which also explains why i said the pool of suitably good candidates is very small.

  15. That explains it all then. I was thinking of the earlier bike with which I had a lot of experience, 7 years and 49,000 miles.

  16. If you are prepared to drop 4cc and a 3 valve engine there is always the ST3 ABS from 2007.
