I am unsure if I'll bother. Riding abroad is not something that I anticipate, but being reliant on a mobile phone doesn't fill me with confidence. I'll think about it
I've had a good search ($urfshark is pretending that I am in the UK now) and they are all too big.. I don't want that. I always have a mobile with me so if I get anything (and it's not a given that I will) I would get a Beeline. Not a perfect solution but I cannot see anything that is. Using up my dsts allowance is a concern as O2 don't tell you. Maybe it's because I was in Spain, so they just thought, "Feck Spain, the Spanish and anyone over there"! it's not a given that I'll stay with O2 but it's getting stuck at the Bath Park & Ride car park. When I get the Beeza, I'll amble over there and check. I think that Vodafone may have sorted themselves out by now. That's a point. Mobile reception around Bath mobile phone reception is terrible. So still unsure.
@PerryL That 150K you mention - is that KB? If so that is piffling and may be just what your VPN is using. See also my suggestion for using GiffGaff on your ‘iphones are shit’ thread.
My monthly allowance is 1 gigabyte. That's always been fine in pre-iphone times. I have bought another 500 megabits this month after the data run out. What I think that it was doing was defying me and uploading the photographs to the Apple cloud. Now I don't dare take it out and photograph anything. With the phone camera being ultra high res, so photo graphs were massive. If I uploaded a photo here and it went to the Apple Cloud, that was 40% of my allowance gone. Giffgaff is really O2 whom I am with. They are just more expensive. If I move to anyone, it will be Vodafone. I just need to check coverage for myself. Lying about network coverage isn't unheard of.
You'll find a switch in Settings -> Photos -> Mobile Data, which allows/blocks the use of mobile data for uploading photos. All these tips people are giving you are freely available online if you take the time/trouble to look.
A fine example of the problems I face. There is no “photos” under “settings”. I can’t afford to take photographs on an iPhone. It’s too expensive!
I missed a step, as I used the search bar in Settings to go straight to Photos. Should be Settings -> Apps -> Photos -> Mobile Data
All been tried with no success. It’s a combination of issues: this website doesn’t allow large files, the Spanish network provider that I end up with doesn’t as well, my data allowance isn’t big enough for each photo being uploaded twice although I’ve told Apple not to, so I am screwed.
As far as GPS is concerned, my preference is to stay away from anything that relies on a mobile phone signal and mobile data. I'll wait until I have the bike to see how much room there is available. I think that Garmin Zumo would work best for me.
