Thanks @Ivor. Ferry docks at 11:45, guess we'll be off by 12:15. We then have a ride back to Gloucestershire taking in the Elan Valley if the weather is suitable. This will take the rest of the day and as I have a family event the following day need to get home at a reasonable hour. So regrettably a visit wouldn't be possible. If you want to join us (Multi, 996 and S1000RR) for part of the ride you'd be most welcome, drop me a PM if interested.
I much prefer the south west area of the waw so here are "just a few" of my suggestions , although based on your post you maybe pushed for time All 3 beara penisulas Priest Leap, start at the Ballylickey end Allihies loop in copper mine addition Lambs head Mizen head The black valley from molls gap Ballagbeama Gap Pass Ballaghisheen Pass Gap of dunloe ( in summer get there before 10am) Caha Pass Ballinskelligs to portmagge waw extension The ring of kerry is great in early spring or late autumn but too many coaches in summer. Much better to go rural and look to the roads through the centre of the ring Steer clear of going through Killarney at mid day Dublin centre traffic is a nightmare most times of the day , hundreds of traffic lights which stay red forever. If your b and b is on the west outskirts, use the tunnel direct from dublin port. Its 10 euro well spent I tend to stay in a great little town called Kenmare for 4 nights and just go out all day exploring and come back to kenmare If anyone else is planning a WAW trip and need any more info on the south west , send me a message and i can forward maps etc ps, none of the above suitable for Panigale !!
Sorry to be pedantic @mikeybikey but for anyone else reading it’s the Sheep’s Head peninsula not Lambs Head, you’ll not find the latter in any satnav/Google/Waze
See attached photo , lambs head is on the adjacent peninsula next to Dursey , however i have been there many times and its never clicked that there was sheeps head and lambs head ! Sub consciously thought they were the same
Your post with a 10:00am cutoff caught me out so I thought from my posting stating 11:00am. Just checked my photographs from last year and I stopped at 10:30am at the Coffee store, when I reached the bottom the horses were just starting to set off?
I stand corrected, I didn’t know that townland was called Lambs Head. It’s a bit of a dead end track though, just serves the 2 farms there.
Westport to Listowel will be a long riding day. If your route takes you to Galway, the roads approaching the city are very suburban with lower speed limits. You may choose to ride through the city, which will be busy, or to take the ring-road to avoid the worst of it. If you are following the WAW. the ring-road finishes at Oranmore and then on to Clarinbridge and Kilcolgan. Turn right here onto the N67 towards Kinvara and Ballyvaughan. The road between Kinvara and Ballyvaughan has some twists and turns which reward care and attention as opposed to maximum attack. At Ballyvaughan, there is a T-junction; turning right will take you on the coast road towards Black Head, Fanore and ultimately to Lisdoonvarna and Ennistymon. Turning left will also bring you to Lisdoonvarna and Ennistymon, but you will climb Corkscrew Hill, a sequence of uphill hairpin bends. If your riding party is not confident with this, then take the coast road. Further south, there is a ferry service crossing the River Shannon to Tarbert which would mean avoiding Limerick. Hope you enjoy the trip. It is a great country to explore on a motorbike.
Thanks all for you input, my birthday yesterday so some time away from my PC and with my lady. Think I'll have to return to Ireland with her and do things at a more reasonable pace to take in some of your suggestions with a more considered tour. Our route is now essentially set, not all my choice though I've had a free hand on some of the days so can't complain. I should have started this thread three or four months ago, before my other co-conspirators got involved. However, this year, for medical reasons there was a chance I wasn't going to be on this one and passed the route planning baton to one of the others. You live and learn...
