Unfortunately no longer with us. His book is an amazing read if you can get hold of a copy as they are a tad expensive.

An interesting YouTube video from him.

  8. I’m in the process of tracing my father’s movements after he went to France.

This is the advice received from the National Archives at Kew. I hope the hyperlinks still work.

“I recommend you consult our guide to searching for records of British Army soldiers of the Second World War. This guide will help you to use our catalogue, or other online sources, effectively and focus your search. As the guide explains, most British Army service records from the Second World War have only recently been transferred from the Ministry of Defence (MOD) to The National Archives as part of the Ministry of Defence service records project. The scale of this transfer means that not all of the millions of records transferred are yet searchable in our catalogue or viewable in our reading rooms.

As a first step, I would suggest searching for your father's name and/or service number in ouronline catalogue. You can also watch this video for more advice on using our online catalogue. It may be that your father's record is not yet on the catalogue. In that case, I would suggest you follow the guidance on our page Request a military service record.

Unfortunately the hyperlinks didn’t copy over but I believe that I have now reinstated them. If I haven’t fixed them all, give me a shout.

  9. I believe my Grandfathers records went up in smoke many years ago when the building they were housed in burnt down.

I don't believe he did much moving around, which goes someway to explain why all his fellow crew members were killed when a artillery shell blew the ammunition limber up.

Their officer went against protocol and stayed in a firing position for much too long.

He obviously survived with a leg wound and was shipped back at the tailend of 1917.
