Hi there, I am rebuilding a 1981 ish MHR bevel…what is the difference between a 1980 wiring loom and a 1981-82 loom?
Ian Fallon's Ducati Bevels Twins book shows three UK 900 Replica wiring diagrams, 1979-80, 1981-83 and 1983-84. The difference between the first two isn't obvious with a casual glance and strangely none of them show a starter motor, but the 1983-84 900 US Replica model diagram does Reading the chapters on the MHR it appears it was still offered as kick start only and any that were electric start probably/possibly used the same wiring as the S2 which in turn probably/possibly used the same wiring as the Darmah. My italics btw. And then you need to ascertain exactly what model year a particular bike is... which isn't necessarily the same as it's registration year. Ho hum
I have had a ‘81loom which did not have electric start and was largely the same as the 900SS except for the location of front indicators and the dash /warning lights and wiring which is Pantah/Darmah. I doubt that the Darmah loom would be compatible due to the awful arrangement of the fuse box/regulator/voltmeter bracket that lives under the tank.
That's a good point... perhaps it's a case of the wiring diagrams are the same but the physical looms are different to take into account the different parts placement. You're right about the awful wiring arrangement crammed in behind the headstock on the Darmah. When I restored mine I did a complete rewire but I also binned the airboxes. This gave a lot more space in that area which allowed me to fabricate my own connector bracketry plus a roomier wiring 'box' behind it for all that componentry. I also used an earth busbar that was connected to the battery earth and ran individual earth wires to it from indicators, lights, solenoids etc.
Whilst I appreciate originality I always run a main -ve the full length of the loom from the battery and branch out of that, bearing in mind frames are mostly powder coated which is polyester which is a great insulator. Also I don’t daisy chain the +ve feeds either.
