1996 Ducati 900ss (carb) On An Abba Skylift – How I Got It Working

  1. Thought I’d share this as I couldn’t find a definitive answer anywhere online when I was trying to lift my 1996 Ducati 900SS using an ABBA Skylift.

The bike is currently having front fork seals replaced ready for its MOT and the Classic TT, so I needed to get it safely off the ground.

The biggest issue I encountered wasn’t the adaptors—it was height.

The 900SS sits too low to fit the Skylift under and install the swingarm adaptors with the bike on the ground.

The solution was simply to put the bike onto front and rear paddock stands first. That gave just enough clearance to fit everything, after which the Skylift could take the weight and the paddock stands were removed.

I used the ABBA Kit 9 adaptor set, removing the rubber bungs/covers from each end of the swingarm pivot to gain access.

For the rear restraint, my bike doesn’t have bobbins, so I wrapped the lifting strap around the swingarm instead. Once tensioned it worked well and held the bike securely while lifting.

The bike lifted without any drama and feels very stable once it’s in the air.

Hopefully these photos help anyone else wondering whether a carburetted 900SS can be lifted with an ABBA Skylift. It certainly can—you just need to overcome the initial height issue.
…hopefully this saves you a bit of head scratching!
