Parts came today, fitted and worked straight away. Don't really understand why that makes a difference given its fully submerged in fuel. Apparently it could be due to cavitation. New pump doesn't scream either. Looks like the Bosch pumps from a few years ago were part number 0 580 454 014 and can work without the pickup part but the newer superseded model part number 0 580 453 408 doesn't pump without it.
I find this very interesting (in as much as useful for the years ahead), especially as many plastic parts for the fuel part assembly have been/are discontinued from the factory and fleeBay's inventory is getting depleted. The US-made Walbro fuel pump (AOU034) looks more simpler and rigid compared to the modern Bosch version and I think that I may have opted for this one, had I known earlier (just to bypass the presence of plastic parts in the fuel tank).
Sharing some further official measurements of the submersible fuel tubes that one comes across within the fuel pump assembly, should they be of assistance to anyone. Although those shown in the pictures that follow are the factory originals, I personally ended up using them only as blueprint for cutting the higher ethanol-spec ones (SAE30R10) ordered by Gates to the correct measurement.
