999 clutch

  1. Hi there, just a general question, how long should I expect a clutch on my 999s to last? Got 8000 miles on a 03 model. Gears all change fine and no slip but been told I need a new clutch. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

  2. why do you need a new one then and who is telling you?

  3. they inspect the gap between the tangs on the friction plates and the basket. should be max of 1mm I believe.

That said I changed mine at 100,000miles with gaps of 7mm and thin wafer of friction material left but then I would never let it tickover in neutral...too noisy....so I saved my self 10 clutches it would seem

  4. You'll need a new one when its fucked, and you'll know when that is.

Oh and sometimes when you think its fucked, a bleeding up will sort it.

  5. Thanks. When it was recently serviced the mechanic stripped and cleaned it up and said I would need a new one soon. Plates and basket.

  6. I wouldn't expect the basket to need replacing yet as you'll feel when ridges in that get too bad. I'd buy the plates ready, especially if you're keeping the bike, then just ride it until it's slipping like crazy and change it then.

  7. Cheers. Not a bad plan!

  8. How do u mean not riding it correctly? I don't thrash it if that's what u mean, and I do blip on the down changes, also cluchless shift on way up. Nothing I haven't done on any of my other bikes?

  9. My recently aquired 999s had a complete clutch at 7K , and i have since put a set of plates in at 13.5K. The previous friction plates were worn past their limit and some of the steel plates were blue from heat and so were some of the friction plates. I just filed and emery clothed smooth the lumps in the clutch basket .

  10. Thanks 4 the advice. Think I'll wait as I only do about 1k miles a year anyway.

  11. I wouldn't worry about it until it starts protesting, you could be spending money for no need. I periodically bleed mine at the reservoir, you'd be surprised at the amount of little air bubbles than come out. BTW there is a small bleed nipple inside the reservoirs
