ST4 Starter Solenoid

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by JR45, Nov 27, 2013.

  1. I have always thought that the starter solenoid on the ST4 is in a daft place - right behind a hole in the lower right-hand fairing panel where it gets a constant flow of road crap and rain. The wiring on mine has got all cruddy and corroded again, causing the stater to be unreliable.
Has anyone ever done the sensible thing and moved the solenoid somewhere else?
Or is it better to just cover it with something to keep the rain and crud off?

    Ideas please...

  2. the starter relay is truly located in most unfortunate place. However there is not much of a choice for designers, as the module has to be close to battery to avoid voltage loss etc.

I would personally replace connector and look into panasonic/bosch industrial equivalent (180A relay for single phase DC motors). I have replaced mine with that one and seems to do it's job... however is twice as big and bit awkward to position.
I'll dig out a link/picture for you once I get back home from work.

  3. Cheers...
The solenoid itself seems to work fine - it's the plug for the switching circuit that appears to give all the trouble...
