I had the slightest of oil leaks from the RH crank case cover on the Desmo, spotted during my service last week. I asked the dealer to sort it and got a picture while it was being done. It reminded me of a watch in there.
Don't look all that clean to me... Defo not olive oil coloured in that bucket... It is a work of art though. Beautiful bit of mechanical!
The oil was brand new. The cause of the leak was found at the end of the service, hence what was drained off had just been put in. It was the bucket that was dirty
Ok. Fair enough.... Question. Oil pipes go into the engine, but how does it then spread the oil where it needs to be?...don't see any obvious way this happens?...
its santas little helpers carry it around in little buckets….. throughout the engine are tiny oil galleries or holes and pipes to you and me that direct the oil under pressure from the oil pump to any where you want to direct a hole………this was one of the issues with the old 996 et al engine and their rockers lack of oil…….on the testastretta there are further galleries that lube the rockers hence no rocker issues…..simples
Oh, once the oil has been to where it needs to and splashed around gravity takes it back down to the sump where it is picked up by the oil pick up with a bit of suction from the pump and it all starts again...
and,…..thats why there is a magnetic part on the sump plug which is right at the bottom where the heavy bits of metal fall, thats why there is a gauze filter on the pick up right at the bottom that traps all the crap and then a filter too to do the minute particles……..and if the filter gets completely blocked rather than it stop the oil completely there is a by pass valve to redirect the oil past the filter on the theory dirty oil is better than no oil…..
fascinating stuff! Thanks for that!... Often wondered how this works... Next question will be about coolant!...
I have done a bit work on Desmos and I was disappointed with the component quality on them. The motor is v nice internally, but the brake system, levers, gear change assembly etc are a bit too mass production quality for the price of the bike. As a whole they are much more than the components it could be said.
