Hi guys! I have a problem with my clutch.Today i went for a ride and i lost one of my clutch spring while riding!I rode over it but didn't notice that it was actually the spring that fel out. However the bike felt strange, shifting was hard and when put her in first gear with the clutch lever pulled in it acted like the lever wasn't pulled in and if didn't pull on the throttle it staled! My question is that, did i cose any internal problem inside the cluth or if i put a new spring in that will solve my problem?Do i need to replace all of the springs or putting one in is enough?Shall i take her to a service and get her fixed there? Thanks, Peter
dropping off one spring alone shouldn't cause the symptoms you describe* as most of us run with 4 springs instead of 6 on a dry clutch anyway. I should check if the others are also loose because if all the remaining spring retaining screws are partly undone then this could cause those symptoms. You could either remove the opposing spring for the cheapest lighter clutch action mod ever or you could obtain and fit another spring ideally of the same height but not critical if it isn't. *Thinking about it, I suppose there is a chance that dropping only one spring off could cause this as the clutch pressure plate would be sitting unevenly and could cause the plates to snag - never tried it so can't rule it out.
It partly depends what type you have but I would take clutch cover off and look at inner face for signs of scoring/rubbing caused by spring retainer caps as this can cause exactly what you are experiencing with clutch engagement/stalling. Have you still got the rubber 'gasket' fitted between cover and crankcase? removal of same would be enough to cause fouling in some cases (NPI).
Thank guys! So if i take out the opposite spring then it should be fixed, right? No the gasket is gone because i put a billet open clutch cover and when i tightened it the rubber gasket broke! It is there partially because i didn't remove it completely just left it in there!Do i need to put a new rubber gasket back on?I lokked at it and it seems that the springs touched the clutch cover a bit because i can see some rubbing on the top end of the springs!I hope i didn't screw it up! How do i know how tight can i tighten the spring bolts? Thanks again, Peter
definitely try it first but obviously your main worry is the stalling and binding. Did you check inside of clutch cover for marking?
Removing the opposite spring should even things out and you should also notice it will be easier to operate at the lever, you've in effect lost 1/3rd of the pressure. The downside is the clutch could potentially wear faster as there won't be enough load on the plates - in fact a 1/3rd less
As Birdie says if you have never taken these off before there is a tendency to tighten the clutch spring retainer screws more than you need to and it's also fairly common for the odd thread to be worn and/or damaged so it's worth inspecting and checking screws for aluminium paste or 'ellipses' even. If you are only going to remove opposite spring then this doesn't apply for this time obviously
Just nip them up that's all I've ever done, there's probably a torque setting somewhere. The pressure on the springs will keep things right.
Check the clutch slave cylinder on the other side also, if this is loose then this can create a similar problem. I would also check to see if the pushrod is broken or damaged (bent) It's unusual to have a spring come out. Is the thread good in the clutch hub and do you have the correct allen bolts in there. All worth checking to ensure that everything is as it should be.
Hi guys! Went to took the opposite spring out but i have found out that there is a rod(red arrow on the picture)that i'm missing as well!So when i lost the spring i also lost that rod!Triedto take that road out by hand but it was solid and i couldn't take it out!didn't wanna force it till i asked you guys!Didn't take the slave cylinder off and haven't looked inside the clutch!didn't start the engine but pulled the clutch and it seems to work good and not in a angle like before!I wanna replace the lost spring and rod but don't know what is it called that rod! Do you think the clutch is ok without that rod or whatever it is?That rod seems to keep the spring in place! The green part is what i'm missing, spring and rod.The red is where i just took the spring out but the rod is still in place! Thanks, Peter
You have lost the post from the clutch hub by the look of it. Is this a slipper clutch? as I have found that some posts from those can unscrew from the hub. I have never seen one come out of a stock clutch hub. I doubt you can buy a single post and in which case you would need a new hub.
The post or rod as you call it has sheared off Peter it is not detachable on it's own. Does the clutch work ok with 4 springs now?
Well,i haven't started her up but when i pulled the clutch lever in it pushed the pressure plate out as it alwasy did! Sheared off? From what, how?Oh crap,so i have to buy a new hub?It is not a slipper clutch as far as i can tell!Well the last owner didn't tell me if it was a slipper but doubt it is! So have to buy a hub?Shit the whole thing is turning into a nighmare. Can i use the bike as is,it won't cose me more damage?
