Ducati never made a 916 SP3 !!!

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by JuttyM, Jan 31, 2014.

  1. ....before the historians/owners start the kicking, hear me out.

I emailed Ducati Italy to check out the numbers for my very own 916 SP3, I even sent them a picture of the plaque on the headstock.

An hour later I got a call from Theresa (great service) to tell me what I have is a 1996 SPS and that her man in the back office has relayed that Ducati never made an SP3....'but i sent the picture of the plaque' said I, 'they never made an SP3' comes the reply.

They've asked for more pics to see 'if the bike had been modified' Well they'll be getting pictures and a set of scans from Falloon's book and the contact names for the JHP team with who'm I've had many a discussion with over the bike.

Any other SP3 owners had verification from Italy? Frankly i'm a little gob smacked...maybe i should point them in the direction of that Livio guy in the museum.

  2. Its worthless now then. Best just to get rid, I'll do you a favour, my old DR plus £500 and I'll be robbing myself blind :upyeah:

  3. Saw a Mutley in Lagunas a while back. A red 1000DS apparently but had 1000DS RS Ducati stickers on it. Most odd. Was told JHP had had it for a bit! Walked away as what the bike actually was and what was listed on the advert was slightly different.
    Buyer beware me thinks.

  4. Will be interested to see how you get on. I've got an SP3 as well.

The prices have gone up now Bradders as there are more rare then we thought....

  5. Bit like Jerry's RRSSR's

    pmsl

  7. Bradders, thanks mate, we've never met and you throw me an offer like that. I don't care what the rest say about you ! lol

F_E, i could make a comment about the noise coming from her backside, but given i need their help I'll refrain. I might fly over though and see if I can get any better sense from her front office :upyeah:

I've decided anyhoo to email them details of my 749 Doohan replica. Now if they say THAT isn't legit then I know they are talking shoite.

  8. Email them I dare ya. In fact lets just get as many SP3 owners as possible to send them verification requests.....Momma Mia !!

  9. I have a late 95 model sp3.
I spoke to a lovely Italian lady called Sofia, very helpful indeed. I've rang them on various occasions to verify my bikes and more info..
mine has been verified by them.
yes Bradders, the sp3 has become very rare and valuable, would be good to find how many members have an sp3?
does anyone know what sort of value they are at, at the moment?

  10. Right so I'm facing upto some Friday muppetry in Bologna.....good, hopefully they'll see sense on Monday.

I'm sat here trying to see if can find something concrete around SP3's. What is your chassis VIN? Mine is ZDM916S008xxx
If it were an SPS I understand the vin would be a slightly different format and the "S" seems to point to a 1996 build. Therefore I'd assume a 1995 would be ZDM916R.........hang on, that don't sound right !! lol

I had a chat with John Hackett around the value of his 1994 Strada and he gave me a figure he'd been offered for it. I mentioned mine, how much i'd put into it etc and the figure we both nodded on was around £10k as a fair value. TBH though, i've seen plenty of SP3's up for waaay less and not rubbish examples. I just think they aren't appreciated/understood/viewed as worth the extra.

  11. Does the "S" mean superbike?

  12. not wanting to hijack thread but this bike belonged to a guy in reading and indeed I nearly bought it myself started out life as a 1000 but jhp fitted 1100 barrels hi comp pistons etc , different cams and all that . I imagine the guy sold it to Laguna as it still had the same mileage when I looked at it and the condition can only be described as mint , no need to worry about this particular special bike

  13. Yes , mine is a 96 model with the 916s on the chassis number like yours and I have an Italian certificate saying 916s. Need a translator to work out the rest! Could be an export certificate

  15. Nice bike Nev - i need to do a few bins shots of my bikes.

The S may well stand for Superbike, yep. The only thing i can gather is that the VIN codes are a friggin lottery. Some of the later bikes have lower serial numbers than mine BUT the prefix on the vin is different e.g ZDMH200....for an SPS.

  16. I wonder if that was Monty's (DSC) Sparky? I've seen it up for £5k a while back.

  17. Sparky went bang, the engine was a complete dog it did 3 laps of Brands after being rebuilt by a well known Ducati dealer in the midlands, it was then rebuilt by a better engine builder in the west county :upyeah:now has 108 at the back wheel & go's like f***.
it was for sale for £5 K ish & would have been a bargain as the engine cost was in excesses of 4K.

    this is true ask Monty..

dont know why this is in the SP3 section? I just answered a post! Sparky is a twin spark SS..

  18. Nev I know that bike well, having debated with Harv a few times about how its way inferior to my old SPS ;-) but also rode with the guy who Harv bought it from, and think either it was Monty's off DSC or he had 'loan' for a while. Well I say rode with. Most couldnt keep up...and he loved a stunt or two!! And sold it for stupid money coz he had a tax return to pay, about 3 grand if I recall...

  19. JHP sid a few starting with psyclists which also went bang pretty quick on a trip to Germany. Oops.
