Open Clutch kits

  1. Hi all and thanks for welcoming me to the new forum

I am looking at various different bikes (all 1098s) and really want an open clutch after looking at/hearing one at the weekend.

My questions are what needs to be changed? I know its a new open cover or half cover but then some have said its also springs as well as they need to be stainless, I have seen some kits which include plates on ebay but the tend to be from abroad so I am a bit hesitant about buying one from them,Is there anywhere anyone can recommend and what parts I will need ?

    thanks in advance !

  2. Welcome to the forum!

All 1098s come with a dry clutch, so it's just a case of switching the closed cover for an open cover of your choice. Bear in mind that an open cover offers less crash protection, so you might want to go for something reasonably sturdy.

As you mentioned, you should also change the plate springs for stainless equivalents to prevent rust.

Everything else can remain stock, though everyone opts for a more bling pressure plate

I love the dry clutch rattle, and it's one of the reasons I've just picked up a 1098 rather than going for an 899.

  3. It all depends how deep your pockets are and what you want to see, you can replace different parts as and when you like, open cover, anodized pressure plate, stainless springs, anodized spring caps, ally basket, all can be changed individually.

  4. Cheers guys and thanks for the quick response has anyone bought the bits from abroad or uk via fleabay and can vouch for quality ? Or is it best to stick with ducati uk or even a uk aftermarket place and lastly is it DIY able or will the springs launch into outer orbit and or it won't start or go into gear once I've messed with it ?

  5. It's the easiest job you'll ever do. I put JHP open clutch covers on my 1098 and Streetfighter. I think they look the biz and are very sturdy.

  6. its really simple job to replace the caps, springs and plate, there a vid on your tube just got to be careful not to over tighten the bolts then only need 6NM, also when your drifit out the push rod from the old cover make sure it lands on something soft

the basket would need a holding tool so you can undo the nuts. machine mart do one a laser one for under a tenner mail order only. apart from that it quite simple too

  7. cheers chaps for this will keep an eye out for bit or one with a kit one has anyone bought one from abroad or ebay at all ?

  8. Even if you aren't interested in mucking about with your clutch, it's worth watching that little clip of film just to hear him start the thing up after he's tightened it all back up - I just LOVE the sound of a rasping dry clutch - it's bloody poetry!

There's loads on fleabay. There are also dozens of internet sites you can get them from. See the ones on my avatar - I bought those from fleabay about four years ago with no problems

  10. I meant my avatar picture of my clutch whch shows by my name. it's of my last bike but you can see from the pic that the spring caps are nice and shiny!

  11. yeah love it will have a look on fleabay and see what i can find want to get the exhaust system polished as well. Done a bit of reading and i'm not sure about having an open kit as i'm a bit worried if i get caught out in the wet and have to get home people seem to indicate that this can accelerate clutch wear /damage due to the inclement weather we have here! Is this right? clutches don't sound cheap and i don't think i would be able to interchange covers easily as it looks like the fairing has to come off and not just a screw off/screw on job. Any thoughts?

  12. Don't worry about the rain centrifugal force will take care of a bit of water.
