After a bike change, I have been sorting out files for log books & service invoices etc. I have just checked the file for my Paul Smart. I have a spare (black) key and a red key but no code card. Should I have one or is the red key sufficient?
I've had Ducatis with the factory immo system since 2001 and have never had to use the code card to bypass the immo.
i only know of one bike that needed the code card cos the immo key aerial failed there are companies that can recreate the key but they charge lots fwiw if worst came to worst you could send you ecu off to be virginised for 25 quid anyway
The important thing is you have the red key . whether or not you would ever need it , or the code card , is another matter . I have never used either and have had numerous of them . I personally would not buy it without the red key , unless it was cheap then I would , but the code card would not bother me .
these ppl in the netherlands do it for 25 euro + shipping Biggelaar Special Performance Pastoor van Beugenstraat 20 5061CS Oisterwijk www.biggelaar-performance.com [email protected]
Just FYI, I've had to use the key-code a couple of times on my Hypermotard after I've washed it. I think the aerial link is a little bit too exposed and gets wet enough for it to trigger the immobiliser on key-on. It usually dries out overnight and is fine the next day! Never had it happen after/during riding in rain though. I've safely stored the pin number in my phone in case it happens when out and about. If you don't have the code card and that happens to you (eg, get caught in a rain storm or something) how would you get home?
Fair point. Could buy some wd40 and give the connectors a douse But your right Having the card is always preferable IMHO
I do try and keep on top of it and I even tried to protect the connectors better when it happened the first time, but I'm now more aware of the situation hence not washing the bike before needing to ride it and keeping the code in my phone so I know what it is (unless it's like today when I've left my phone at home!!).
I've been bypassing the immobiliser with the code for a little while now due to the aerial not reading the key and as has already been said, the red key won't help you there. Im hoping when i finally get around to taking the shroud off the ignition and having a look at it this week that i'll find its a lack of protection against water that has cause the problem, as it usually is with the headlamp really, and ignition coil, and.... If you've not checked already, it may just be that the aerial has dropped down inside the cover. This happened on mine once and I pushed it back in place and it worked fine. I swapped it for a carbon cover a few months later and made sure that the aerial was glued in place (one of those stick-glue melt guns) and it's been fine. I think my problem was at the connectors by the headstock (on the left-hand side as you sit on it) as they are covered with a rubber boot but may have got water trapped in them when washing.
It's in the owner's manual, but basically when the engine is IMMO'ed you press the menu button UP to get to the "COD" (code) menu, and then hold DOWN to start the numbers flashing. You then use the DOWN button to change the number and UP to go to the next number. Once you've put all the numbers in and pressed UP again it will unlock the engine. It's worth trying - unplug your aerial lead to test it! - as (a) you'll know what to do if you need it, and (b) it's quite cool!
