I will shortly be receiving a pair of Rizoma fatbars to fit on my Monster 1100 Evo (why a pair when it is one unit?). What is the best way to remove the grips safely (without damaging them) for re-use? The standard bars have a textured coating which I imagine will make removal more difficult. Thanks
same as Wantz has said, get a thin screw driver, and carefully push it in-between grip and bar, use the straw on the wd40 can and gradually spray it under the grip, leave for a while, and carry on until it moves freely,

If you go down the screwdriver approach, try to stab yourself when it slips Personally, I'd take the opportunity of getting some proper grips on there, either Renthal or Progrips
Yep, not worth the aggro for £12 and you keep the original grips on your original bars. JHP Parts Products - Pro-Grip Gel Touch handlebar grips
Thanks for all your helpful replies. In the end I used my compressed air gun to break the seal then the wd40 which worked really well. I decided to get some new progrips but I still had to remove the grip from the throttle side which was a bit more tricky due to the flanges at each end. Patience is the key I found.
I just used a Stanley knife. The OEM grips are rubbish, rock hard and needed to be consigned to the bin. The ProGrips are much nicer and softer. The flange on the outer of the grip used to hurt my palm after a bit of time, thus I got rid. I glued mine on but the glue was rubbish and didnt take. Thus Ive lockwired them instead. I tried hairspray and that never worked either.
I don't mind the OEM grips on the SS.......... .....the easy way to get them off is to push/pull the inner big flange towards the outer end.....that way the grip expands as it gets shorter so all that holds it is the outer end.... ......I push them on from the outer end with the inside wiped with a damp cloth...........
