My bike (used daily) sits on an Optimate overnight. I actually put a new battery on it yesterday. 7am this morning i turn the ignition, the volts are showing as 12 ish. Once running, almost instantly it shot up to 13.8/14, around there. Within 30 minutes of riding it drops down to 12, sometimes 11 odd, and flashes, almost an alert that there is a problem. Does anybody else's do this? What should it be showing while running? I did add an earth lead off the negative terminal, running to the bike's frame, as i read this helps with starting. Could that have a negative effect, excuse the pun? Thanks.
Reg/Rec on the way out? overheating? We just replaced the stator and Reg/Reg on a mates 748, it was showing 12.6V at idle (not enough) and then as you revved the bike it would drop down to around 10V. However the telling part was that when we measured the raw output from the Stator (Alternator) it was delivering approx 70Volts at 3/4 max revs instead of nearer 130-140V as recommended. I would start with looking at what your getting out of the stator, then measure check the Reg/Rec, loads of threads on here for fault finding.
There is something definitely up with mine then i think, for a new battery to show 12 ish while running, intermittently. Thanks for the help.
Why did you fit a new battery? It could have been the charging in the first place. I think that we have all made that mistake.
Where do I measure the reg/rec from? Do I just hold a multi meter to it, or are there two points in particular under the black plastic cover to measure from? (I'm not the best at this )
