749s Cut out While Riding and Imobilised ?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Dubs, Aug 3, 2012.

  1. Hi Folks

made it home after a fantastic break in Germany last week. The bike was great until the last day.

I was a fair distance frm my hotel in Germany ( Austria / Swiss border ) and I had ridden through the worst downpour I have ever experianced, anywhere.

Sersiously it was that bad, I have seen showers before but this took the biscuit. Europe is known for the deluges but this was beyond anything I had ever experienced.

Anyway, after thr rain we continued to ride, the bike was fine. I was half way up a mountain, literally when the ORANGE light came on, engine management system? The bike immediately slowed to a stop.

The "0" beside temp guage / key light were both flashing along with the engine management light. I turned the bike off, turned it back on and nothing. No fuel pump spinning up. Tried disconnecting the clocks, still nothing.

Now its going to my mechaniic when he is back from hols but anyone any ideas? Bike is back in Ireland this weekend so would like to see if I can fix it.

    Cheers.

  3. When this happened to me on my 999 in France it was the 3 amp fuse for the ECU that had blown. The cause was the alarm being shorted by the rain. The fuse is located to the left side of the battery carrier, so it is a fairing off job to check. Fuse kept blowing until the the alarm was removed from the loom.

  4. @ "its me". Tks for codes. Nothing was showing on clocks which is what i found odd!

@ "chrisw" Tks again. wilk check it out.

Bike back to Dublin tonight, will have 2m & let ya's know.

Much appreciated replies. Will keep you posted.

    tks!!

  5. Ok. Tried holding in buttons while turning ignition.

The display showed "999" enen though bike is 749. But no error code??

    any ideas folks?

    Tks.

  6. OK, figured how to tget the code. You actually only hold down the LEFT button on the dash while turning to ignition on.

So, I have manged to get the code.

Its error 38...will have to check again tomorrow and verify. I think its an immobiliser problem.

    See attached.

  7. Right.......Error code 37.3

Seems the immobiliser antenna ring behing ignition cover could
    be loose(?).

    Will confirm later...

  9. Folks...

sorry, i never updated this thread.

The reason my bike cut out was down to a 3 amp fuse ! Going up a mountain in Austria i cut out. Lost everything, bike dead, no elecs.

Turned out, before I left I had an alarm installed.......the cdi unit was not closed up properly by alarm guy and the rain caused a short ! I sh1t you not.

    A 3 amp fuse.

Always look for the most obvious.

  10. Mine turned out to be the fuel relay after riding in the pouring rain..... wouldn't mind but it was a brand new item used for only two rides.

  11. Replace it with a 5 amp, will still be safe, but shouldn't then blow again, 3 amp is probably a bit sensitive.
