Removing Wheels - Tools??

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by rac3r, Apr 27, 2014.

  1. I'd like to have a go at removing my wheels on my SF1098 to do a few bits. I need to know what tools are best for the job. I will get a stand, I know about the rear wheel nut socket but mainly I need to know about which wrench to get because I read the 1098 rear is done up to a ridiculous torque spec

  2. get a torque wrench, or ride it round your dealers to be safe

  3. a decent breaker bar to get the fecker off. And a decent socket too.

  4. @wantz1 Still considering this after reading some.

    Recommendations on torque wrench?

  5. I know, I'm talking about doing it back up again

  6. Halfords sell a very sturdy, long 1/2" square drive bar/wrench. It's about 16" long and you can get good leverage on the socket. Works well on my 1200 Multistrada. Cromwells do a very good range of torque wrenches and I bought one that goes up to 320Nm and is more than ample for the job. Andy

  7. Just do it til its tight, you'll know coz the holes will line up for the clip

  8. Don't bother with the Oberon or similar after market sockets, they're crap (ali).
Buy a big fuck off socket, big fuck off breaker bar and enlist the help of the fat bloke from down the pub to sit on the bike or hold the rear brake on.

If you have the funds buy said big fuck off socket and a rattle gun, then no need for fat pub denizen!

  10. As Nelson said

I don't do mine up to the recommended torque but still tight usually about 180-200. Unless I was tracking it I wouldn't go that high its just ridiculous number unless you are planning to transmit every last HP the engine can deliver.

Now I'm not saying that its right or even safe but so far the wheel has stayed on and I haven't had an issue.

I do remember great debate on the old forum on to torque to spec or a bit lower.

The Clarke rattle gun will make your life a great deal easier if you go that route no drama with; breaker bars, fat blokes, walls, steps and broken body parts when the thing lets go and your least expecting it

    Just my experience

  11. What comes off has to go back on!

I take it the rattle gun is for removal only?

  12. EDIT how the hell do you quote!

Yes Rattle gun for removal only. The Clarke mains gun is hugely powerful and cheap. I've used it a lot not just on the Ducati and its a bloody Godsend I wouldn't be without one now

  15. Cool, recommended socket to go with the impact gun? Also a wrench to tighten again?

    Thanks everyone so far!

  16. hi all

just popped down to the local suppliers for work stuff & while i was at it, bought some stainlees steel bolts for the engine covers.
while at the shop, i noticed they had a sale on for teng tools and got me thinking about torque wrenches.
which 2 or the 4 on offer would you go for for use with the bikes?
