848 Wont Start

  1. When I put the key in to start, it is completely dead, no lights of any kind. A new battery was fitted a couple of months ago, I also use the trickle charger. I went for a ride a week ago and everything was fine. Went to start it this morning and nothing. Any ideas please!

  2. First stop, put a multmeter directly on the battery and check it's fully charged. Trickle chargers can show that a duff battery is fully charged even though it still may not have enough juice to turn your engine over (yup, even a new battery can have a fault). I'd expect to see 12.7v or so on a new battery in good condition.

Step 2. Check ALL the connections from the battery forward paying particular attention to any earth points. If it's been recently replaced and an ignition wire or pickup coil wire may have been disturbed and be pinched/worked loose which might cause a similar problem. Also, check the connections to the ECU itself.

Step 3. Using your multimeter, check to see if you're getting 12v at the starter solenoid and then the starter motor itself.

Step 4. Check the immobiliser/key - can't be too much help here though as it's a bit voodoo for me. However, almost every mechanic I've ever spoken too has said that if there's an electrical problem, then it's odds on that an immobiliser has got something to do with it. That's why the older I get the more I like old skool Dukes without all the electrickery :upyeah:

In this way, you'll hopefully be able to nail down the area where the fault lies, even if you can't tell exactly what it is.

I would have thought from what you've said about it being ridden recently that it's unlikely to be anything major. Most times, the simplest thing will be the cause, so have faith :)

  3. There is also (according to the wiring diagram for 1098) a 30 A fuse I think it lives down in front of the battery.

From the looks of it if that has blown or become dislodged somehow I don't think you'll get any power to anything.

    Just a thought

  4. Really daft suggestion but hopefully its the case here.... You didn't knock the red cutoff switch on the bars did you?.... On a ride out a few month back mine cut out on the go... Lots of head scratching & panic as I was miles from home / didn't have my mobile.... Another helpful biker pulled up to help & flicked the switch.. Sorted.. Did I feel a cu~t?? Just a bit.
