Hi I have a 600SS that I undertook a cosmetic restoration of over the winter, and having recently finished her, I have now ridden for about 100 miles. As I have no other 600SS to compare it with, I just wanted to check a few things with everyone in terms of the following settings/positions: 1) I have set the rear shock up as per the settings in the Haynes Manual. Are these settings OK or would you recommend different settings? 2) How much of the fork legs should ideally be showing above the top yoke and is there an ideal distance (number of rings/notches)? 3) The clip-ons where fitted so that they just cleared the top of arch of the fairing (although now that I have fitted the mirror extension blocks my hand touches them on full lock); but again is there a standard (i.e. factory) or ideal position both vertical (distance below the top yoke) and horizontally (distance between bar ends etc)? Any help would be useful. Regards Gary
1) Rear shock.....I assume it is the Sachs Boge shock.....preload should be 14mm........if it is the Showa shock, 10mm might be nearer. For the Sachs shock the lower screw adjuster should be 6 turns out from screwed right in (clockwise)......The blue adjuster knob on the top of the Sachs shock should be 25 clicks out from fully closed (clockwise). For the Showa, both screws fully in, and then both one turn out. NB! For the 900 & 750 with the Showa rear shock, the preload shoud be 10mm....(For the 750 with the Sachs shock, start with the same settings as the 600). 2) For Marzocchi front forks, the usual is four spaces between rings showing..........For Showa forks, the preload should be about 18mm measured from the top of the fork to the top of the preload nut.........For rebound (top adjuster) 6 clicks out; and for compression (bottom adjuster) 4 clicks out. 3) My clip-ons are 9mm below the top yoke......there used to be OEM decals on my Marzocchis, but they eventually came off............I don't know if the attached will help, but worth a try.... However, I stick mine onto full lock and adjust the clip-ons so the switchgear is clear of the tank and so my hand isn't trapped.
Thanks, I'll check at the weekend and let you know how my forks and clip-ons compare. The rear shock is currently set up as per your settings (i..e the same as the Haynes manual). But I'll need to check the preload as the knurled rings were difficult to move and I struggled to get them adjusted to the recommended 14mm.
Thanks guys, the info and more importantly the pictures are really useful. I have 4 rings showing and have adjusted the clip-ons so they are 10mm below the yoke and when on full lock the left-hand bar switchgear is 5mm off the tank. It feels better. Just need to pop out for a ride to see if I can detect and change/benefit.
