998 Front Number Board

  1. Heat em up all over with a hair drier before you put em on, will help a great deal.

    I threw a motograffix one on couple of weeks ago. Its quite thick, gel type.

    Money well spent.

  4. Never got round to getting a number board..... I did get the carbon vee panel from The Carbon King, which looks decent fitted with the carbon front mud guard.....
     
  5. Ah, OK. Mine came with the rubbery type and it is lifting on the sides. I'm going to wait till its been outside all day on a nice hot summers day then attack it with a hair dryer. Hopefully its OK underneath. I like the look of the number boards, just not the one I have.

  6. I took my my nose cone and to a local place that advertises vehicle graphics and the like last winter. He didn't have much on that morning & did it for a £10!

  8. I like the £20 ebay ones as you can get them with a silver or gold border to match the frame!!! Just the getting it on straight and air bubble free.

  10. If you mean with the gold (or silver) trim & the rosetted #1, yes.

    I just didn't fancy bodging it up so gave it to a pro!
     
  11. Interested by this thread. I've got one on my 998 like those pictured on p. 1. It was put on very neatly by the engineer who owned it previously. I've long leaned to taking it off just so the bike looks totally as standard, but a friend warned me that the red plastic underneath might not be quite the same shade due to less light exposure etc.

    Has anyone who took one off found that to be the case? And if not, which would encourage me to have a go at taking it off, what's the best way to do so? Cheers.
     
  12. I would say he is likely to be quite right. Red is a colour that is very prone to fading for a couple of reasons, I would be inclined to leave it on or at least be prepared to repaint the top fairing if need be.

    A warm air gun be it a hairdryer or a proper paint stripper\variable heat air gun will soften the plastic of the numberboard enough to peel it off gently, just heat a small portion at a time and peel of a bit and then keep warming and peeling.

  13. I picked up my bike in November and it was covered in stickers and I was warned the same. Did the hair dryer technique and it was easy enough. Cleaned up the gunk/glue with we40 on a rag. I read "if it's too hot for your fingers, it's too hot for the paint", so kept the heat fairly low and spent about 4 hours in total.

    For the nose board I'm going to wait for a hot summer day to get the glue good and soft.

    I have no idea how long the stickers had been on the bike. I have not had her outside yet but I can't see any colour issues.

    I think it depends on her life, if she has been under a blanket all her life you may be ok, if she has had the board on for 10 years and has spent day after day in direct sunshine, you may not.

    Only problem is on the after market rear seat unit I have found paint damage and some lacquer missing under the stickers.

  14. Looks like it was some sort of attempt at an Infostrada replica, not the best rendition of the graphics and a few in the wrong place.

  15. I think it was 1 £60 set on eBay in the Troy Balis schema.

    Either way, it had to go!
