Hi guys, I'm into a 748R, found one but the question is, is it genuine? Strange thing is, the engine numbers doesn't have an R in it, just zdm748w4b, frame: zdmh300aa1b. So the question is it a real R with a motor changer or is it genuine? Thx for reading. Regards, N
has it got a numbered top yoke also if you can see the cam belt covers there wider on the R's. looks clean and original though.
The R model has no castings saying Desmoquattro on the heads, they are plain. The belt guards are wider and also have a slight gap where they bolt to the castings as they are built up from the back to allow clearance for the wider belts. The gap is even all the way round It should have a one bolt ignition pickup, or at least mine has as a 2001 model engine so 2002 would be the same. That looks like a R frame as the water hose goes around the outside of it which means that you would have to change the coolant overflow bottle if it were not a genuine engine. I would say as best I can see from the photos that it is genuine, to put a non R engine in you would have to use one from a 1999 bike and a non E version so it would severely limit the number of engines you can swap into an R frame. I have a 748S which has an R engine in it that I converted myself and you have to change several parts to undertake the swap, so to do it vice versa would involve a bit of work and the injectors and mapping would need sorting out for it to run properly
The forks and calipers look correct. Can you ask the seller to lift the tank? The injectors will tell you what the is. If they're shower type, it's most likely real.
Thnx, as for the cosmetic parts it's all genuine and comes from a true R as far as my knowledge will go. The problem I have is that it has the wrong eng. number, just the plain W4, could they just use some std crank cases to build it. Also notice the grey belt covers, shouldn't they be black?
cam covers are all grey, just wider where they meet the engine. is the engine number not on the v5 document??
The bike is in the Netherlands, the frame number is only applicable for the documents there. So it seems like it's a real 748R, didn't had any doubts but I just need confirmation about the R that is not stated on the engine or frame number. Nick
My main bearing went on my 748R engine after 4,000 miles (from new) so it is no better or different than earlier 748's. Something you cannot predict despite a good service history.
So I dropped an email this morning to Ducati costumer service and guess what, just had a nice Italian lady "Paula" on the phone, and she confirmed that frame and engine number do match and are from a 748R. Me happy. Many thanks for everybody that helped me out!!!
