1199 Tyres For Europe Trip

  1. We've got a trip to Southern Italy coming up in September that will be around 3000 miles in all. I stick quite religiously to Pirelli Super Corsas on all my bikes but they tend to be noticeably worn after around 2000 miles. Does anyone have any experience of other tyres that might last the distance a bit more happily that are still nice and grippy? I was thinking the Rosso Corsas might be a nice option?? I've done a 400 mile trip on the SuperCorsas in heavy rain without problems so I'm just looking for something that might last a bit better.

  2. SC's on my 1198 last 3k. Just. Ive also ridden in monsoon conditions on SC's but I wouldnt want to do it again. I'd consider the Rosso's. After a 120+ dash from Langres to Calais, the centre had blistered on the sc's but that could be something to do with the wind. Never had that happen before but we were tonking it a bit, it was 30degC and windy.

  3. Whereabouts in Southern Italy will you be going?

  4. Thanks Bootsam, thats good to hear you get 3k from SCs on the 1198. I've only done 700 miles on the 1199 but it looks to eat rear tyres pretty quickly. A few hundred of those miles were around the IOM TT course though so they should last a bit longer in general.

El Toro - Plan is to go out via Germany to cover ground quickly, through Austria then into Italy via the Stelvio pass, Lake Como, Bologna for a coffee at Ducati, San Marino, then down to the girlfriends mums place in Bari for a few days. We'll return via the Amalfi coast and then through France.

  5. Cool. If you happen to pass through Genzano Di Lucania (which you won't ;) ) stop and say hi to my rellies :upyeah:

  6. Looks like a good place for a coffee break when we're heading off from Bari to the Amalfi Coast! :)

  7. I have a rubber fetish. It's what keeps you glued to the road and translates everything between the road and you. M7RRs FTW!

  8. Anything Corsa is not gonna do high miles on those roads. I use a standard Rosso 2 and it's spanked after 3k tops when touring. If you go near mountains and above the winter snow line they use shell grip and it's like sandpaper to tyres and they will last even less. The oem SC blistered on the front a few years before and felt like wood and was quite scary.

Had to stop for a new tyre in Andorra last year at just over 2k on a Rosso 2 as it was almost down to the canvas after riding mostly on roads at the snow line. The front was on the wear limits at the end of the trip on the sidewalls.

Angel GT for me this year but whether they do them in 1199 widths I am not sure. I have never run out of grip on a standard Rosso 2 myself and an angel GT is a similar Dual compound tyre just a little harder and needs a bit more warm up.

  9. Thanks for that Spoonz. I guess a large part of the miles will be motorway in Belgium and the autobahn in Germany but we do have about 300 miles across the Alps in Austria and N Italy. I think I'm going to see what sort of state my tyres are in before leaving and if they do need changing for the trip then try the Rosso's.

  10. I commute around 80 mils a day on an 1199 Panigale and the churn of tyres is shocking. After speaking to a number of tyre manufacturers at the NEC and a couple of race meets, none provide rubber for the 1199. It's a 200 rear which seems to cause the issue.

Ducati themselves said that any tyre other than the Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa throws out the engine management system. I've heard of people running alternative tyres, although it's also worth considering if the tyres are non-standard and void the insurance.

  11. ive just ran pilot power 2ct 190 rear they are good only got 2500 out of rear was past best a 2k ,they do make the traction kick in quite a lot, that's on setting 4/5 tho, the traction kicks in even when off throttle turning into junction/tight corner , im now going back to a 200 rear for next set ,

  12. Don't they sell tyres in the rest of Europe?

If they are worn out whilst on the road, get them changed there. Shimples :)

  13. Haha yeah of course. I was just wondering if it made sense to consider something different for lots of miles on the motorway. It never occured to me that it would be difficult to get the 200 size in other models. I'll stick with the Pirellis either way as I like them, perhaps give the Rosso a go if I need to change before leaving.

  14. Because they have the 100bhp law in much of europe, big sports bikes don't sell that much (Italy being an exception). Hence most tyre shops don't stock tyres they won't shift fairly quickly and when they do they are expensive. It was nearly £200 for a 180/55 rear tyre in Andorra including fitting and that is a common size. Out in the sticks they had no Ducati style paddock stands to even get the wheel out anyway. Luckily there is a dealer in Andorra.

A 200 section tyre i bet would be special order or dealer only for the most part.
