1199 Viewing A Used 1199. What To Look For?

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by MergatroidSkittle, Jul 14, 2014.

  1. Thinking about viewing a used 1199. Is there any tell tell signs that something has gone awry or something that would suggest the potential for big bills?

  2. Private or dealer?

And it's a 1199 FFS. They are as reliable as JIL4's nowadays.

  3. One thing I found after buying mine was that the plastic on the lower fairing where the horizontal exhaust pipe is had melted very slightly because the exhaust can spring mounting had been touching it. It's not at all serious or worth worrying about, apparently it's quite common especially if it has the full termi system fitted. I haven't done anything about mine as it's so slight but it's something that can be used for bargaining. Also one tip, all the aftermarket bling costs a fortune, so if you want termi's or the comfort seat, tail tidy, carbon fibre etc it's better and cheaper in the long run to try and find one with it already fitted. And trust me, sooner or later you will want to add bits to it, it's an incurable condition you develop once you buy a Panigale!. :D

  4. Thanks. Looking at private ones. Mainly worried about whether the bike has been dropped etc and how to tell this because as I understand it the "S" had a problem with the stand not being long enough.

  5. Mines an 'S' and I've never thought the stand wasn't long enough or had an issue with it, as far as I'm aware all the stands for all the variants of Panigale are the same. I suppose if you looking out for a dropped bike just look for the usual signs such as scuffs on the pegs, handlebars, broken fairing clips etc, anywhere that protrudes. The tank shoulders get it in a drop so if it has carbon tank shoulder protectors on it, it maybe hiding something, same goes for the swingarm, if it has a cover on it try to have a look under it.

  6. How would you check any other type of bike? Do the same with the Panigale

  7. Possibly a little harsh! I agree that there are a set of 'must do's as with any bike which I won't insult u by listing, however from my limited knowledge I would check for:

    - Weeping Ohlins fork seals although they may be better now.
    - it should have had extra rear cylinder and exhaust plastics fitted, to try to control the heat, it was a recall so if it's not been done ask why.
    - check the dash carefully for any issues like excess fogging etc as they are apparently really expensive.
-check that ALL keys inc master key are present and if there have been any mods, where are the standard parts.
    - I personally would also check for signs of wheelie abuse; eg shaped wheels (although u will feel those on the ride) and notchy head bearings.

    That's just me though!

  8. Not harsh at all, just common sense.

  9. Some good points there, although a lot of people take the big pan exhaust guards off because they look ugly. I don't have them on mine but it's a personal choice.

  10. I would just look out for all what has been mentioned above, i would be extra careful when buying from a private seller, not sure if that is just me though. Make sure if any warranty work has been carried out the service sheets match the service book, mileages are correct, dealers are legit. Don't be afraid to ask questions, if it something doesn't sound or look right dont be afraid to ask questions, if it's legit the seller wont have an issue with you asking. If the service paper work doesn't add up then give the garage a call to check.

Finally if the price is too good to be true (an absolute bargain!) then ask the questions why. When i was look for a pani i found one in Wales with low mileage and considerably cheaper than others with similar mileage and age. This bike was advertised on ebay and MCN (i think or Auto trader) on the ebay add it was advertised as 'i am selling this for a friend'. Immediately i thought hmm doesn't sound great but i couldn't ignore the price so i called the guy up and spoke to him, mentioned the bike was also on MCN and he denied that it was, and the rest of the story about the ebay and the location just didn't add up so decided to give that one a miss.

Also i did go see another Pani in Norwich and the guy seemed like a nice chap, but the bike just was not in a great presentable condition and personally if i was selling a bike i would make sure it looked immaculate if anyone was coming to view it and this just put me off slightly.

I got my new Panigale last Tuesday and picked it up from Ducati Wolverhampton and i just felt a whole lot better getting the bike from the dealer, the bike was sold by them, all servicing was carried out by them, HPI clear, all the documentation added up and the bike looked mint. Because I was spending a fair bit of money on a relatively new bike I wanted to use a dealer but if i was getting a 5 year old bike that wasnt as expensive i wouldnt mind buying off of a private seller. One thing Ducati Wolverhampton did tell me though was to make sure when buying a pani second hand to check it is not an import as they had one guy bring a pani in with a problem and when then tried to do a diagnostics check on the vehicle it turned out to be one from india and they could deal with the issue as the equipment was not compatible. How true this is i dont know but that is another question to ask.

  11. I would also add that although problems are rare; it is a totally new platform so check for signs of weeping around cylinder base gaskets and bits of panels that don't fit quite right incase the engine has had to be worked on at some point, everything should look factory! And especially the mileage. I think really u just need to be 'fussy' but they are pretty solid from what I have experienced. My friend is a Ducati service manager and they don't get too much trouble.

  12. Some good points. Im going to look at one this week if it doesnt sell before and will bear these bits in mind.

  13. I also spoke to the guy in Wales he didn't stack up & then texed me to say it was sold !!! But still advertised ?
The 1 in Norwich looks like a tarts hangbag ! Sorry if it yr bike
    Just looks wrong !!!
But you take yr choice & pays ya money £1500/2000 more in dealers
I personally think there being very Greedy
    Were they about £15750 in 2012 ?

  14. On the base model the forks can apparantly be problematic, however I was advised on here that if they've been rebuilt after mid 2013 they're likely ok. Other than that I didn't discover much in the way of problems on them, yes I had a complete change of heart and ended up with an RSV4 but I expect I will still have a Panigale in the future too.

  15. Hasn't the 899 got a gixer 600 swingarm ! Lol

  16. Regarding the forks if they haven't been changed in mid 2013 is this something I should bring up with the dealer I brought it from or should I just wait for the issue to occur which it may not?

  17. I think.. the fork 'issues' were with the non-S Marzochi's and got sorted mid 2013
