Broken Chain

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by apuhtred, Jul 22, 2014.

  1. Took the bike to Silverstone yesterday. Great day and just prior to the end the chain snapped. No oil or damage apparent so stuck a new chain on and went out again only to be pulled in as the bike was smoking. Further investigation by the site mechanic found a piece of the casting right above the front sprocket shaft was missing. Just phoned Moto Rapido and been quoted around the £2000 mark. As the clutch is going to need to be renewed soon starting to wonder if it is worth doing or just right it off. Any ideas?

  2. No ideas but I feel your pain :(

  3. What do people think I would get if I sold it on as spares? Lots of bits but I suppose second hand they do not bring in much.

    Regards Steve

  4. Steve, check out the following thread in the Supersport section - 'Would you believe it - one engine saved' - dated Nov 6th 2013. MADASL had a bike in where the chain had obviously snapped and holed the casing, but they got it repaired okay for reasonable cost. Might be worth trying to contact them. I now have a case saver fitted to my bike.

  7. You can repair the casing with Devcon, I am not sure what bike you have but I have repaired several casings including TZ Yamaha racing crankcases that have dropped con rods and have scored the cases and also Ducati side casings that have been holed through chains damaging them and due to crashes on the waterpump side where the casing has worn through. If it's not distorted then it could be salvageable.

  8. aren't the cases just aluminium? if so, you should be able to get it welded up. a competent tig welder should be able to weld it up without having to strip it down by cooling down the surrounding area around the weld.

  9. Red 998 what is Devcon and where do you get it from. Have been offered a welded up job and am thinking of doing that. Apparently Ducati will not sell just one bit of the case you have to buy the whole thing as they are machined together. Have been quoted from £1400 to £3500 for Ducati parts. Am awaiting quote from Motorapido. Has anyone had a successful outcome to welding one up?

  10. Many years ago I worked at a place where amongst other things we welded aluminium parts mainly from motorcycles, we always insisted the part was removed from the bike, any ancillary parts removed and degreased.

Motorcycle shops are always going to sell you a new part if they can, but welding Aluminium is really not that tricky, providing you can find some one with the right kit. Look up non ferrous welding in your locality

  11. You could also try a Belzona Super metal repair. 1111 is a chemical metal like Devcon . If it is non structural, a good degrease and careful application, possibly with gauze to stop it entering the engine. Cummins Diesel use it as a permanent repair for stripped head bolts, so it's not a Mickey Mouse repair if done properly. I've used it to repair gearbox casings and a water pump that was made of cast iron to good effect..

  12. Tempted to make a case saver for mine, just in case "no pun" 750four used to make them.... what happened to the guy who took over the task?

  14. true but that is only for the shop's convenience. as long as you can reach the part to be welded with the tig torch then it's a goer. but then, what about all the other parts kicking about inside? may not be worthwhile.

  15. that sounds like a good idea. is he still making then?

  16. ok, thanks... what like?
