iv a dp dry slipper clutch conversion on my sport classic as per fitted to 848,s. anyhows basically I need to know what servicing it needs and any advice re upkeep, usage etc etc ?
If it follows the same convention as the 748R you should have either 9 sintered, 4 flat 1.5mm steel, 1 flat 2mm flat steel and 4 convex 1.5mm steel for a race clutch or 7 std friction, 7 flat 2mm steel and 1 convex 1.5mm convex steel for a road clutch. The first plate to go into the clutch is a friction plate and the nominal friction plate stack should measure 22.5mm but if it is less you mix and match the 2mm for the 1.5mm or if the friction stack is less than 21mm chuck them and get new. Depending on how hard you are using the bike and engaging the slipper, you need to regrease the ramps (and balls if you have them) and the spider shim. I'm doing mine every 5 or 6 track days depending on how many sessions I do each day as the clutch gets very heavy use. The grease is expensive but is a generic lorry 5th wheel grease which my local friendly heavy goods repair centre allowed me to have a large spoons worth which will see me through for a while. You may be able to feel the clutch operation lose its slickness but I'd inspect after a couple of thousand miles or so. You can operate the slipper by try to undo the clutch centre nut which will let you know if it is smooth. I have a 411Nm LiPo 4Ah battery impact driver to undo that nut so a 3/8 drive socket shouldn't touch it but it will give you enough purchase to feel the ramps moving over each other. Andy
Update : just checked with my local Ducati parts department and the sintered clutch packs now come with 8 friction, 2 dished, 7x 2mm and 1 x 1.5 mm steel plates. Confused ? I know I am now. Andy
With normal road use can't see it needing much in the way of servicing, if it's a ball & ramp type as Andy says they need greasing now and then, for me that's about every 3000 miles.
the clutch started groaning so I presume I need to give it a little service, the problem is iv no paperwork, instructions, exploded diagram etc.iv removed and checked the plates but didn't want to go further in case springs bearings and bits flew everywhere lol. great advice by the way folks, much appreciated.
ok removed the plates and using emery paper I cleaned the various surfaces on the steel and friction plates.then re fitted making sure the domed plates were fitted correct. the clutch is now operating as it should and slipping on hard downshifts.
Has anyone used a slipper on a 2v? Do they work on the 2v or does the 2v engine not rev high enough / torque to make them of use? I'd be very interested to read your feedback on fitting it.
