My 1098s came with Termis fitted, all has been well todate however more recently I noticed a couple of spots on the Carbon sleeves about halfway down the sleeve, where they appear to have got lighter in colour almost like heat is being concentrated in one area or something? At my local bike haunt there was a guy I got talking to who also owns a 1098s, he said that his went the same and that eventually he blew holes throught the sleeves! :-( He recommened I take the outlet caps off and re-pack or get someone to re-pack the cans before I end up with holes in them! Anyone else also encountered this? Trying to work out what to do for the best :-#
the sleeves look like they could do with revitalising as the laqueer although not crazed is going a little discoloured. I thought I'd try to get them re laquered or if needs be I'd re laminate them myself with Carbon and 2 pack fnishing epoxy.
I know of a pair of titianium cans that came off and 'R' Not sure how much they would want for them. Also if they would look a bit bland on the bike after having the carbon Termis on the bike?
packing. Exhaust packing Wadding sheet 450mm x1m Motorcycle Universal Muffler Can Filler | eBay each to their own... but i do like the carbon silencers on our bikes. titanium is probably more practical but like you said, maybe a bit bland.
if you're that worried, buy the ti or stainless sleeves, have them blasted and then wrap with a ply of carbon. Simples.
This is the best packing material that I know of, Acousta Fil. It is easy to fit as it expands under heat. I did my 748R silencers with them and it worked a treat. This is just a link to the product as no doubt a search will get it cheaper than Demon Tweaks. Acousta-Fil Exhaust Silencer Packing - Demon Tweeks
Thanks guys - @Red998 That Acousta-Fil looks just the ticket! Any idea how much I'd need for both cans? it comes in 1 metre lengths, I'm guessing that would be enough to do both? Never done this before although have chopped cans down so have drilled out and re-riveted before. I guess both end pieces need to be removed and then the new packing needs to be wound around the centre tube / baffle? One or two raps around? What do you secure it in place with?? Cheers Paul
Here's a link to the site, they have a calculator that does the job for you. Acousta-Fil Infill Calculator Buy from eBay as one lister sells them by length so just buy what you need in one length. They come in different widths so make sure you get a width longer than the can and cut it down with scissors. You only need to wrap a small amount around the baffles which makes the job very easy. I used masking tape to temporarily hold the wrap in place as it is paper based and burns off easily.
@Red998 Thats great thank you very much for your help. So it's going to be a case of completely removing the sleeve to repack properly as opposed to trying to feed the acousta-Fil down from the one end. (of course after removing whats left of the old stuff)
Sat here at work Just thinking how can I get the dimensions of the cans on the bike so that I can place an order for the packing today Anyone have such information to hand? I did a google search on Termi dimensions and turned no results. Also seems that Termignoni have no longer have any affiliation with Ducati? Probably old news that, but not ever having looked at their site before it took me by surprise.
Measure the outside length of the can which will give you the width and buy the Acousta Fil that is that length or slightly longer and then cut it down, you will then bet a perfect fit. You need to strip the cans completely to do the job properly. There are two reasons for that, firstly to make sure all the old wrapping is taken out from both the baffle and inside the can and secondly so you can effectively wrap the whole length of the baffle. Acousta Fil starts to unravel if you start poking it about, it's designed to be wrapped and then bound in place. At most it is half a days work or less if you are doing the job thoroughly and cleaning everything and wrapping it carefully and tightly. If you try any other method like poking it in from one end you might get a hot spot where it doesn't wrap effectively and then you could seeing scorching, discolouring or eventual damage to the can. When I took my cans apart I took the opportunity to use Stainless rivets and they were unbelievably hard to compress due to their big size, I would recommend alloy rivets and the biggest riveter you can find. I have a professional riveter\rivnut setter and using that with stainless rivets was really hard on the hands. My baffles were filled with wire wool and also a steel fine mesh over the baffle which was spot welded in place, you would not get this off if you didn't strip the can, these were JHP branded cans but I suspect they are just rebadged Termignoni's. To be honest if you skimp the job you are at risk of damaging the cans later on. Since I finished mine they dropped by 5db and are now within trackday limits, just, but i have to use DB killers. I tested them with a DB meter from eBay which was surprisingly accurate. Here's my thread on it from when I first contemplated the job. @Red998 Sorry for the delay in responding. Thank you very much for all your help and advice, I'll be getting some Acusta-fil this week and tackling the job on Sunday
