Squeaking Noise When Riding Slow (monster 796) - Help!

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by pisquano, Sep 3, 2014.

  1. hi everyone
I had my Monster back from a major service for 2 weeks, and I have noticed it started to develop a strange squeaking noise when moving the bike at slow speeds (or parking it). it's a small, quick squeak every revolution meaning that it's not the suspensions at all.

any chance what could be causing this? also I already wrote to Metropolis as the bike definitely didn't do this before the service, although it took a few days after having it back for me to notice it, so I am not entirely sure it's their fault.

    thanks!

  2. it's a 2012 M796 ABS

  3. ride faster??

..perhaps there is a mouse trapped in there somewhere?

  4. I will ride faster, but I'd like to know what's causing this

  5. Do you have a pillion passenger when it happens? Maybe your passenger is enjoying the ride?

  6. i had a squeak on my m1100 and it was front wheel not put back correctly.

  7. Put bike on paddock stand, then slowly rotate rear wheel and see if you can hear where it comes from.

Front might need a helper, get the helper to lean bike over on sidestand until front is off the ground and again rotate wheel to see if you can hear it.

Most likely just a brake pad binding but good to check as squeaks can be annoying. Good luck.

  8. thanks Bootsam but I don't have a paddock stand - I also think it might be a brake pad

  9. You can do the same for the rear as you can for the front, but you need a helper to lean it for you.

  10. does the noise go away when you press the brake.

  11. Is it a squeaky ear ring like in the VW advert of the 90's?

  12. A mouse?, they squeak too...

  13. you mean if I touch the brake lightly?

  14. will check shortly and report. this way I should at least (maybe) understand if the issue is with the front or rear brake

  15. Don't ignore my extremely helpful suggestions, just check the dam ear rings and check for a mouse :Banghead:

  16. If I remember rightly a tiny drop of oil on the ear ring sorted it in the VW advert...

  17. Just where it pivots... :)

  18. check wheel bearings
could be a dry bearing or wheel not fitted correctly (as mentioned)
if not fitted correctly it could have damaged the bearings

  19. I agree with Johnboy - worth investigating wheel bearings.

I don't know if the 796 uses the same wheel bearings as the 696, but on the 696 they're a known weakness (I'm on at least the 3rd set of front and rear wheel bearings on my 5 year old 696).
