916 Heat Shields

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Gingernuts, Oct 15, 2014.

  1. After a ride out at the weekend, the Sunday roast was leg of Ginge so it got me thinking about exhaust heat shields.

First, are the CF ones any good at shielding heat or is it just a bling thing?

There’s lots listed on Ebay for the 748, 916,996 and seem to come in 3 flavours, the square type that are a copy of the OEM 916 one, then there’s 2 boomerang shaped ones with different fixing centres. I’m guessing that the smaller of these is for the Bip and the longer for the Mono.

Since the 916 doesn’t have any bosses welded to the exhaust pipes to take either of the boomerang types how can they advertise them as being suitable for the 916? Somehow I don’t think double sided tape is going to work and there’s no mention in the ads about fixing clamps being supplied (or available).

Can anyone with the knowledge throw any light on this please?

  2. Wrap your leg in that fibrous heat wrap. My 54mm system doesn't even have a facility for the square lozenge heat sheild let alone the boomerang shaped one. But you can buy, i dont know where, jubilee clips with captive nuts. Then you can attach the boomerang if you wish.

  3. I have CF heat shields and never had a problem..

  4. My 916 has never been an issue, the 1198 on the other hand is like a spit roast gridle.

  5. the mounting clamps are available on fleabay sometimes. I think I have a pair suitable for 45mm midsection knocking about in the garage and surplus to requirements.

  6. Thanks Cranker a piccie would be helpful if you can find them. If you want to part with them let me know.

The question still remains though....Do they actually do any heat shielding?

  7. They do help yes. Sat in traffic though and you're always gonna start cooking yourself. I put some silver reflective tape behind mine. Can't confirm it helped any but the voices in my head said it would.

  8. If you have a mono seat you can insulate that with heat reflective tape, I have seen that done. I have made the clamps to take the SPS (boomerang) style exhaust heat shields and did this to two of my bikes. You need a decent jubilee clip and a rivnut inserted after drilling the clamp. It is a fiddly job though but when fitted the shield will stand away from the exhaust and offer some protection\insulation.

  9. Thanks for the info if all else fails I'll have a go at the jubilee clip method. Am I right in thinking that the longer of the boomerang types is only suitable for 916 monos?

  10. What can be fitted only really depends on what mounting you have on the pipes. If you're putting jubilee clips on I'd guess you could put on which ever one you want :upyeah:
