  1. OK Guys an girls need some help

2001 996 runs great over 2500-3000 rev's ( like it should) but below this the front pot stops firing

cleaned the plugs / great spark and still nothing until hitting 3 grand.. never had a problem before

on her. ive done no work on the bike to cause this except put new battery on 2 weeks ago and all

was well until Friday afternoon .

Any ideas would be great.....sounds to me like fuel issues?? but at full throttle all is ok ( or anything

over 3000rpm) nice big spark on tick over so not coils / leads or box

    help cheers john

  2. When did last have the valve clearances checked? I'd star with a compression check on both cylinders. If the compression checks out ok then start looking for electrical/fuelling issues.

  3. Ok, does it have a power commander? If so, take it off and see what happens.
Thinking aloud here, but if it's a 4 injector type are they all firing? Has the link bar between the 2 throttle bodies come loose so the front butterfly is opening later?
Can I also ask how you know it's the front pot not firing?
Actually forget the link bar idea, sure you all know why.

  4. no power commander but is chipped
and on tickover vertical pipes spit evaporates on touch and on front pipes sits there and bubbles :)

  5. Chip program should be fine, PCs go mad too often really.
So does it tick over ok. They sound and feel like a dumper truck running on only 1.
With the tank up and using a torch you can see if the injectors are working. Trouble is because you've gotta open the throttle wide to see past the butterfly you won't get long to see before it passes 3k and runs ok. At least it could rule out fuelling issues.
To be sure you could also swap the coils, leads, plugs and even ignition amps if it's a big square P8 ECU.

  6. I would try swapping the coils over . see if the problem moves to the rear cylinder if not then the coils are ok . Just incase as its easy .

  7. There's a thread about a 748 cutting out at 2100rpm. Might be worth a look until any other ideas get mentioned. The TPS is a common problem on these but i can't see how it would only affect 1 pot.

  8. ticks over like a bitch shakin and going but get it above 2500-3000 she rides well

  9. that's my plan charging battery right up now then start swapping bits

  10. More serious than as it should burble!

  11. found the thread 748 cutting out 748 - 748 Stalling At 2100 Rpm | Ducati Forum

alas mine dos'nt cut out it pulls through it. your just riding a dumper till 2500rpm then back to normal

I manage a 30 mile round trip fine as long as I kept the revs up but as soon as they go down to 2500/3000

im back on a dumper truck

  12. Since only one cylinder is affected it's either a duff coil, plug, injector, the ECU (very unlikely as it will either spark or it won't) or a compression issue.

  13. Had something like this with my SS.
It turned out to be a loose alternator nut, which affected the pick-ups. Had to get new pick-ups from Electrex in the end...
    Are you getting any knocking??

  14. The 996 is an injection bike with a completely different ignition system from the old carbed SS. It has one crank timing sensor which, if faulty, would affect both cylinders.

  15. ok took the day off work today..
disconnected the battery, voltage good condition good..reconnected battery started bike to check charging and shes fires on both pots charging at 14v ish...helmet on off we go 40 mins later no problems not even a misfire

I bloody hate things like this........you just know its gona happen again....any ideas??

  16. Well at least you can be sure it's an electrical problem

  17. My mate had a Yamaha that would run fine, until he sat on it when it would cut out. Turned out to be a broken wire under the seat unit that just touched together until he sat down and stretched the cable a bit.
Along those lines, your removed alarm idea might be worth perusing.

  18. Sounds like moisture is affecting something or other . Still points to a coil for me .

  19. shes garaged and not been out in the rain for a while , tools and a bag of plaster has not been affected by condensation or damp so reckon that's ruled out....will spend Saturday workin through the loom checkin and spraying contacts..
    sure its something dumb

  20. £300 for her sat here! ;) need some parts you see
