My 749 has an on-dash error of the front coil shorting out. Bought a new Beru coil and it is still there. It starts and runs, although i do have to have the choke lever quite high up to keep it from conking out. After a time the light goes and you can hear the bike almost come to life, and the revs shoot up due to the lever being way up. However it doesn't stay like this for long, the light comes back on again and back to rough running. It also sounds like it is firing on one cylinder. I found this thread - 1198 Dog Rough! | Ducati Forum Could it be mine is suffering from clogged injectors? I have noticed when i first turn the key, the fuel pump clicks and clacks (for want of a better term) and then flows smoothly, rather that just the smooth flow noise i seem to remember used to happen before this light came on. Thanks for any help.
Sounds to me like the fuel pump/injectors/ relay is on the blink. A change over is reasonably easy ( once you have found the bugger) and only costs circ £2. The 749/999's are vulnerable to front coil pack problems as the front wheel sprays water directly on the connector. There was a modification to the coil pack made to mitigate this issue, don't know if you have this one? Worth removing the front coil pack and the spark plug to dry everything out to eliminate this.
Thanks John for replying. The guy in the shop did explain the coil i bought was a new type that had the extra rubber to stop the water getting through to it. I previously changed the relay and relocated it to higher up to above the battery. Should i remove the front plug again and dry it off, although i did do this previously? Is it ok to aim a hair dryer in there to get it extra dry?
Definitely worth the trouble of removing front coil pack and spark plug and drying out if required and cleaning. The nose of the coil pack should be removed for cleaning ( don't loose the spring when disassembling ) Don't know what light you are seeing , mines a 2004 model . The fault code of shorted to earth front coil pack is indicative of a failing relay! I use a thin stick with some rag wrapped around the end to insert into the plug recess for drying , and a small torch to check all is as it should be. I can't see any problems with using a hair dryer, compressed air is probably more effective , but like me you probably don't have any.

even if you think the relay is ok, swap it for a new one and rule it out. its worth swapping the horizontal and vertical coils over to see if the error jumps. if it does, its the coil, if not and the relays been done and the wiring is all good then you may have the dreadded coil driver failure in the ecu. early bikes with the different ecu sufferred from this. have a google and you will see. if so, fear not as its an easy fix.
Thanks all. Relay has been replaced and bike has not been used since then. The error i am getting is 10.2 - Horizontal coil shorting to earth. Still got this after replacing the front coil with a brand new one. I guess the logical thing is to swap the coils over and see if the error jumps. Mine is an 06 model, but i will look into the coil driver failure.
The IAW59M ECU used between 2001 and 2004 can suffer from coil driver failure. Antonye (Avanti Race Parts) has had success repairing them. A better alternative, if it is the coil driver, is to buy a second hand IAW5AM and have it flashed to a map from a 2004 749. You can use an ECU from an 848, 1098, 1198, HM or SF. Personally, this is what I have done on my own 2003 999.
Electronics are electronics, you can never say never. All it takes is a little corrosion or an accidental short and it is toast. Is it a crap spark plug?
Can the coil pack resistance be measured for any signs of shorting, which 2, of the 3 pins on the connector should be used, what values are expected?
Found this, not specific to Ducati, but worth a look if you are interested in this sort of thing. How to test the ignition coil by Dan Ferrell | Auto Hub 360
Thats where I would start . If you have changed the coil which would have been my thought . Then it has to be the plug next. Quality one .
Did you ever get this resolved Pavey, Was it the ECU in the end as my bike is giving the exact same symptoms; 10.2 error, new coil and plug makes no difference??
Hi mate I didn't, no, but i have left it for a while. Changed plug and coil was the last things i did, and it was still there (the error). It is due to be serviced soon, hoping they find a cure. i'll keep you posted.
Pavey Is it possible you have pinched the wires that go to the horizontal coil between the fuel tank and the valve cover retaining nut?
I'm reasonably certain my ECU has coil drive failure after replacing coil/plug and still getting the same 10.2 error, so I'm going to go the re-mapped secondhand ECU route! If this works I'll post on here!
Should be getting mine back early part of this week, hopefully cured. I'll let you know of the outcome.
