Help! My Brake Lever's Fell Off!

  1. Image attached (rear brake pedal not lever :) )

Is this normal for a <3 year old Ducati Evo? How exactly do I tighten the bolt when if it's too slack it'll just come off again but if I tighten it too much the lever won't move? I'm presuming this quandary is why it came off in the first place?

Assuming I can figure out where it all goes - the washer/rubber washer goes on the thread which goes onto the bike, the spring hangs off the lever and the rod goes into the rubber foot....

  2. You should be able to fully tighten (which i'm sure you guessed) as the shoulder of the bolt should allow freedom of movement even when tightened. Other models are assembled in a similar manner and I'm guessing there is a slim spacer missing as some need one/some don't. When you achieve the right clearance then best use a medium strength Loctite after cleaning both parts of thread.

  3. Cheers, I'll go buy some loctite as there's none on. Just a lot of grease and dirt between the threads :)

I think there are rubber washers for spacers on either end of the bolt.

  4. it does look like you have all the parts so something is odd

  5. with all parts clean you could assemble again (sleeve is in place in lever?) without spring just to confirm it's definitely locking up. If it is then either there is damage/distortion or a foreign body somewhere or you need an additional shim to extend the length of the shoulder. Have had similar happen many times.

  6. Is the washer (item 12) there and in the right place?

  7. Yes, seems everything is there. Thanks for the diagram also :)

I guess the shim (item 14) is the thing that lets it spin. Just need to figure out exactly where the spring (6) goes.

I'll drive home carefully, or as my mate says, "only puffs use the rear brake" ;)

  8. it can only fit on the smaller diameter of the bolt so is foolproof as such

  9. I hate this Ducati parts diagram. #14 is the brass bushing that is push fitted inside the lever at the manufacturer.
You can't buy it separately, so there's no point in showing it, let alone listing it!

  10. hmm. don't know if it's on or I've broken it.

I tightened the hex bolt until it was getting tight then it just moved a bit further round and is kind of just turning without getting tighter. It doesn't feel like it's coming off but the brake pedal doesn't feel perfectly tight, there's some slight lateral movement to the pedal if I wiggle it.

Is this ok, or have I broked it? :(

Either way I'm not exactly thrilled by the design, there's less than a centimetre of thread to screw into the bike for something that takes the weight of your foot constantly.

  11. sounds like you have stripped the thread in the footrest hanger that the bolt goes into if it won't tighten up.
    perhaps helicoil will sort it.
don't think there is anything wrong with the design, never heard of anyone having a problem and its been used like that for quite a few years and models

  12. Exactly, the shoulder of the bolt tightens up against it and prevents the bolt nipping up on the brake pedal.

  13. I took it in to the garage and he tried to make me feel better by saying it's easy to thread the aluminium block :)

So he drilled a new hole and fixed it all up. Cost £25 (instead of £0 he was going to charge me to put the lever back on if I took it in to him).

He said the brake hadn't been touched by anyone so it just came loose, but when he was putting it back on he found that there was too much powder coating on the block causing the lever to stick/jam sometimes and he had to file some of it off. His theory is over the years this had caused the bolt to come loose.

  14. still not sure how you got there but a happy ending is enjoyed by all :upyeah:

  15. Aye, I've emailed Ducati asking for my £25 back given the fault may have been there since it's creation ;)

  16. Lol.. Good luck with that! but hey, you dont ask you dont get an all that! good that you have it sorted anyway.
