Back Again!!

  1. Tank started leaking after re- assy, but turned out to be sender( alloy FE), had come looseish. Tried jumping from a mates blade, now starter won't turn and solenoid just clicks. I have voltage at motor. Any suggestions. Is starter knackered? How can I check? Is their an easy remedy. I have another starter. Cheers
     
  2. Had a problem with my starter motor. To be sure it was that I got a fully charged battery and some jump leads connected the negative to a footrest and the touched the positive directly onto the starter post. This eliminates bad connection problems, relays or solenoid. Engine didn't turn so fitted a new starter and all was good

  3. My starter packed up a couple of weeks ago. It's never been hit or in an accident but 2 of the magnets inside had broken up and were shorting out when i hit the starter button.
    You can see then pictures of it in the 748-998 section under the thread, SO, I'M AN IDIOT
    £99 replacement from WEMOTO.COM thanks to a tip from Louigi Moto and that problem sorted. Still wont start though as the sprag clutch is also buggered.
     
  4. Yeah will strip starter. Have taken new one apart, but can't see how to get amature around sprung bushes!?? Tried to wire up new starter but didn't want want too go with not being earthed to anything. Will look at old one.
     
  5. Be careful when jump starting as you can damage the electrics and never jump off something like a car battery. It's possible to do more harm than good in some situations.

  7. Someone on the old forum fried their stator and a few other electrical parts trying to jump start their 748. Turned out to be an expensive business.

    Safest to try and start the bike using only the battery designed for the model and don't jump start or link batteries and definitely don't attempt to use a car jump starter that delivers a huge jolt to the electrics.
     
  8. As long as the car battery isn't connected to a running car engine it should do no harm. I know a bloke who tried to jump start his 900SS from his car with the engine running. The electrical spikes from the car's electrics fried both of the bikes ignition modules.
     
  9. ^^^ It can if the cold cranking amps are too high on the battery and the starter cannot take the amperage.
     
  10. Sorry I have to disagree with you. The CCA is the potential available current from the battery. The starter will only draw the current that it needs.

  11. Have jump-started motorcycles from car batteries all my life without a single electrical problem as a result. As Derek says ideally the battery needs to be not larger than 50 ampere hour and car engine definitely not running.
     
  12. a wee note, some vehicles have smart charging systems now that can whack out up to 18v. so deffo dont start car. might even be a wee idea to switch on car head lights for 30secs before to take off any surface charge.

  13. Well, I think I've done all of the above. I'm going to put the new starter on today so I'll tell you the outcome later( that is if I can get it back together!!
     
  14. Could someone please tell me how to get the armature back into the casing and between the spring loaded brushes, otherwise all this information will be useless. Kind regards.
     
  15. Got starter out and it doesn't feel bad. But haven't stripped it as I haven't been able to put the other one back together yet!!??? Got to go to work at 3 so won't be able to do it today, again. Could someone please get back to me with a solution for assy.
     
  16. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg Sorted. Didn't realise that starter split into 3 pieces. Magnet on body chipped, windings burned, brushes worn out. Great news. Only found out that starter spit in three after dismantling old one. Happy days. Back on the road tomoz.
