Hi all, I have had the oberon SC on my 748 bip for about 6 months, over the last couple of weeks I notice that the clutch lever will builds pressure for some reason (it seems to build resistance making neutral really difficult and eventually locked). I re-bled the clutch and it appeared to improve. Having just done 100 miles, it appeared again, so in a similar fashion to the 'aftermarket brake lever pressure screw' common issue on the MC, I backed this off on the clutch lever but no difference. On closer inspection, the clutch slave was red hot, deffo something up and huge pressure on the lever. I stripped and cleaned the Oberon slave and then re-bled using a halfords DOT4 and as if by magic, I have a working lever. Testing for another 80 odd miles, it seems cured. I was using fully synthetic dot 4 fluid, could this be the cause? Thoughts would be appreciated.....
Not likely.....I'd have the plates apart....I suspect you have some sticking together....do you get a huge CLONK when you try to put the bike into 1st, coupled with the bike trying to leap forward?
someone once told me that if the ends of the clutch pushrod arnt greased up then it can start spining which in turn makes centre of the clutch cylinder spin !!! not sure if its a myth ?
I had something like this happen years ago. Turned out the bearing in the middle of the presure plate had siezed causing the rod and slave cylinder piston to spin, cooking up the fluid and the rest you already know
Actually, there is truth in that, mine appears to have spinned as its marked on the face. I guess if the seals are not lubed, this resistance plus pushrod spinning will cause heat expansion, causing the pushrod to stick and build lever pressure - This does seem feasible. Now that the old girl is home, I think I will get it off, on the bench, clean thoroughly and grease/clean/refit....
I had a clutch jam up on my old 848 and solved the problem by a dab of grease on the rod tip (oooo matron!) the goes in to the slave. Since then I've done this to all my bikes and never had a problem, coincidentally my clutch fluid remains clear and not the usual black! Worth doing as reg maintenance IMHO.
Check the bearing in the pressure plate any sign of stiffness or notchy feeling replace it with a new bearing. brian.
Now this is why I love forums, thanks Brian. Clutch plate removed exposing a knackered bearing. Fitted a new one courtesy of my local bearing specialist and all together, so far so good. Cheers all.
Hi there,I had the same problem a while back on my 996s,the bearing in the pressure plate collapsed causing the rod to spin boring a hole in the piston inside the slave cylinder,Glad you caught yours in time
