Anyone on here had a problem like this before??:- Went for a ride yesterday and bike ran fine although engine light came on. Stopped for a drink and when I returned the bike wouldn't start. The error was 19.2 starter Soleniod shortened to earth. I found the 20amp fuse at the side of the dash had blown so changed it and the bike starts fine, however the fuse blows again! Got through a further 2 fuses to get me home (stopped for fuel) and have been looking at the bike today. I have checked the wires from the battery to the starter Soleniod and can't see any damage, the terminals that go to the solenoid are clean. The only wire I haven't checked (ie. taken off) is the one from the starter motor itself to the solenoid. Quite an annoying problem really. Any words of wisdom appreciated! Bike is a 2003 999s
Exact same thing on my exact same bike. I tracked the fault down to the front brake stop light switch on the right handlebar. Dealer said the micro-switch had failed when I took it in. Micro-switch replaced and no further problems, touch wood!
New earth straps required and a new lead from the positive battery terminal to the solenoid. I bet the solenoid to starter motor lead is corroded at the starter motor......
I'm guessing that the solenoid itself is fine as the bike does start when a new fuse is put in. Looks like all the wires are coming off then! What is the plastic connector in the middle of the 2 larger wires on the Solenoid connected to? Do you do a kit Nog?
That little 2 prong wire is a supply to bridge the switch that is the solenoid Peo, I dont do a kit but if you cant get to a Halfords i could get you a set sorted.....Lol..there'd be PROFIT involved tho ! Lol...
Haha cheers for that... I've got Yorkshire blood in me so I'm too tight to pay you to drive to Halfords for me:smile: Time to take everything off and have a refresh I think. Thinking about it I did do an accidental awesome jump on the Market Harborough TT road yesterday that could have damaged a wire... It won't beat me though!
Mine was the same symptoms, same error code. You can test it in your garage if you have a few spare 20A fuses. Hold the front brake lever in for a couple of seconds whilst the engine is running, release, hold it in, repeat a few times (pretend you're doing a lap of Cadwell Park, that should do it). You will likely blow the fuse every time. If not, it's what Nog said as he's rarely wrong
Cheers chaps, I'm out of fuses now so will grab some more when I visit halfords.... (Loz were you following me at Cadwell then?! Haha)
Not this time, Peo LOL I had to cut short a two-dayer at Cadwell a while back because of this issue, as I'd nearly run out of fuses.
Well Loz it looks like I have the exact same problem as you! When I press the front brake lever the lights dim slightly then the micro switch gets red hot and pops the 20 amp fuse.... Just had a quote for a new micro switch for £48! Seems pretty pricey for something so simple. Anyone know or a cheaper alternative?
Good stuff, glad you've cracked it. It cost me about that, too. Let us know if you find cheaper.
Found a new one in USA for £30 posted... Think I'll just buy it. Apparently brembo have them made on licence and you can't get them direct from the supplier. KTM owners have the same problem. Brembo always seem to be able to keep control of things like switches and seals etc!
Hopefully you won't get into a tangled mess ordering in from the States. As long as US Customs doesn't view it as "exporting restricted technology" ... LOL.
