St4s Master Cylinders - 999 Calipers

Discussion in 'Sport Touring' started by Turbogeek, Mar 8, 2015.

  1. Evening All,

Today I finished servicing my new-to-me ST4s, and put the fairings on for the first time (they were removed when I got the bike). My bike has the 4-pad 999 callipers fitted, and the brake master cylinder has been changed to suit. The clutch master cylinder has been changed the brake master.

The issue I seem to have is that the lids of the master cylinders hit the inside covers to the top fairing when approaching full lock. As far as I know, this is an instant MOT failure? It seems to have been like this for a while, as there are fairly deep witness marks on both sides.

I have tried to rotate the cylinders round the bars further to get some clearance, but without luck as the banjo fittings hit the bar risers.

Does anyone else have this problem, and what did you do to solve it? Do I need to look for some different master cylinders? I wouldn't mind but I spent a while changing the brake fluid and cleaning and re-spraying the master cylinder lids before I found this out!

    Here are some pics:-

  2. Could you trim or file the inside of the fairing to create some clearance?
Failing that, you can change the master cylinders to normal remote types but you'd need to buy the reservoirs, buy/make brackets and the little elbow adapters to connect the reservoirs to the master cylinders. Quite easy but maybe not worth it if all you are looking for is a couple of mm clearance on the inside of the fairing.

  3. If it is only a little adjust the stearing stop screws

  4. You mention bar risers yet I can't see any fitted to your bike. I took the bar risers off mine as the cylinders came into contact with the fairing.
You can adjust the steering stops, a quick job, but that may restrict the turning ability when manoeuvring in tight spaces.

  5. I have the remote reservoir for the original ST4s master cylinder, if that can be used. Does anyone know if the connection for the reservoirs is the same?

  6. You will need the little elbow connectors and some new brake pipe to suit. Can't remember where I got mine but I'm sure somebody will be along with a link. Was it biketorquracing? Dunno.

  7. Thanks all for your input! Johnny, I don't really want to restrict the steering lock any further, it seems its already quite minimal on steering angle compared to my H***a (sorry)! Bob, I don't have bar risers fitted, but that is a great suggestion. RickyX, thanks for the suggestion - I'll try biketorque or another Brembo dealer for the bits I don't have. I have the Ducati P/N for the little elbow from the parts manual (631.4.008.1A).

I've had a look and should be able to make something up for the clutch side from what I have already, but will need to get the reservoir, bracket, elbow, hose and clips for the brake side. I will put a Wanted ad in the classifieds, but does anyone have any spares, maybe from a worn out master cylinder?

  8. I converted my 749R to remote reservoirs, it only cost around a tenner for everything - reservoirs, tubing, elbows. I made my own brackets. So, it's cheap to buy the stuff new rather than wait for secondhand stuff.

  9. I had a similar problem a while ago due to the right-hand inner fairing panel being held in with a self-tapping screw (don't ask) which meant the edge of the master cylinder just touched it. Yes, it should be an MoT fail. So adjust the lock-stop at MoT time, then move it back out again afterwards...

  10. To follow up on this thread, I finally got round to fixing this. I used the original ST4s clutch master cylinder reservoir, rubber mount and bolt, and made a new bracket. I didn't have the original brake master cylinder so I bought one from PDQ Motorcycle Developments, and made a matching bracket. Took me a couple of goes with some cardboard templates to get the location absolutely right.

The hardest part of the whole job was getting the 90º connectors into the boots on the master cylinders.

In case anyone's interested, the Brembo P/Ns for the parts ordered were:-
    - 110.A26.385 - Master Cylinder reservoir kit, front
    - 110.312.720 - 90º Inlet connector (and rubber boot)

  11. Looks pretty good...
    :upyeah:

  12. Looks great, nice one!
