I was wondering if I downloaded an Iphone app for speed camera locations, does it work GPS location of the phone? does it form an internet connection when running which will cost me money? Like the idea of the app, but, worried that if I left it running while out in the car, it will end up costing a load of money due to it running a constant internet connection. Sorry for the numpty IT question.
Depends on the App.. some will use GPS others might use the cell connection. This one I think uses GPS, but you could always ask on thier site. Pocket GPS World - SatNavs | GPS | Speed Cameras
Thats the app I was looking at. I've always been wary of phone based sat nav's, speed camera apps etc running up bills .... I may probably be worrying over nothing.
I think most of them download the updated positions from the net, when you start the app, but use gps to identify your position in relation to the camera. Tomtom does the same. So the data connection will be minimal, or start the app and update at home on wifi first. Anth
Carbon749 Macca (one "A" and XxAnthxX are absolutely correct. GPS only during use. I have used the pocket GPS world app for 2 or 3 years now, I have to say its one of the best speed camera "spotters" I have used. The only time that my iPhone connects to the web via 3g (or wifi) is when I allow it to. If your camera database is out of date when you start the app up it says " take care you are not using the latest database" if you want to you can leave it 'till you are on wifi or update there and then, however the updates take ...maybe 30 seconds as they are pretty small. I have to say I like this app because everyone contributes, if they see a camera that is not on the database they can report it, and if it is verified then you can get free lifetime subscription. However, keep in mind to switch the thing on!, as I didn't on friday :-( and will be anxiously waiting for two weeks to be up! (to find out if I got a ticket. Cheers Maccaa (two "AA"s ) (ok three in total)
Just remember never to use it in France, they are planning really big fines for using anything that spots cameras on the road
Everything in Switzerland is but more so, we went there about 12 years ago, eldest was a baby, we had to pay to get into the country (road tax), the the babysitter cost more than dinner. I wish I could say I was never going back, but my dad wants one last nostalgic trip to Jungfraujoch. So I (like a fool) have volunteered to go with him, one day to get there, two days sightseeing and then another day coming home. Total exhaustion and all without hubby and kids, my dad is lucky I care about him!
Do you have to pay for this ? Had a look at the web site and it says free download then says you have to subscribe? Regards Steve
Hi Steve, I believe the app is free and comes with the latest database which you can use, but this will obviously eventually become too outdated. If you want the, roughly, weekly database updates you have to subscribe which is about £20 a year. Maccaa
