Engine Thinks It's Not Warming Up For Ages ! Then Pow Everything’s Ok.

  1. I have a 07 plate 749 on 8k its starred playing up recently in that it starts fine but will not run 100% until the engine has gone way beyond normal running temperature; I go to work at 04:45 that time of the morning it is cold, my ride is all dual carriageway and motorway for approx 21 miles, the gauge on the clock shows 68-71 during the journey about 15mins into it I try and open it up, it will only do, how do I say this without incriminating myself, 69mph > and it will keep misfiring, spluttering, as if it’s got petrol starvation, similar as if you still have the choke out in the old days, until all of a sudden it’s as if “I’ll play now” and Pow runs as smooth as anything, perfect, doesn’t miss a beat, and I can’t put my finger on why all of a sudden it decides to do this, I did start it in work one afternoon (Air temp much warmer) and left it tick over for a good 10-15mins temp went 100+ fans kicked it ok still left it ticking over, and it behaved faultlessly on my journey home.
I’ve taken it to Royston in Rodgit twice now and he has had it on the rolling road adjusted the ECU in and out of its tolerance settings and it is no better.
Could it be a sensor of some sort and if so what one to try first ? any suggestions on this problem would be much appreciated.
    Steve.

  2. Think you've answered your own question. There is an air temp sensor behind the nose cone, the black object on the left side of the headlight housing [IMG]

also look at the water temp sensor.

  3. Are you getting any error codes at all ? Did theguy you brough ti to plug it in to read for fault codes?

    See my thread here:

1098s Bad Running And Error Code 13.2 Vertical Cylinder Injector Error | Ducati Forum

I had an almost similar problem, but it didnt make a difference what the temp was.

Mine was a fuel injector sensor above the airbox on the 1098. One of the clips had came loose and it wasnt making a full connection all of the time.

Its gotta be something small, id put money on it.

  4. Thanks so much for that, and a photo can't get better than that, I will get the bits off tonight and clean and re fit the conection is there anyway of testing the sensor ? Whereabouts will I find the water temp sensor ? good guess on the rad somwhere might save me a bit of time if you can give me a pointer please.
Thanks for your help I may be able to sort this out myself now.

  5. Thanks for the reply I'm hopping t is something small as well, you don't happen to know if the 749 injector is in the same place (ish) and how would I get to it, mine doesn't seem to matter for most of the ride what the temperature is either, I will look at the link now it might make sense if I can see where it is.
He put it on the dionosti machine I'm sure I heard him coment on there was no faults showing, I'm assuming he would check for faults, those that know Royston he seems clued up, I may be wrong.
Thanks again I will look at the link now.

  6. All faults should be stored on the bike until they are actually cleared by someone. They shouldnt just disappear ( thats, if there are any ).

My problem was on the circuit for the rear cylinder, so it was a process of elimination after wiring up the diganostic ( which my mechanic guy done ).

Im not sure where the sensors are ( i am brutal at mechanics ), but see below may help.

  7. Thanks for that, I might have to bite the bullet and take it to Ducati Cardiff.

  8. I would buy new for the air temp sensor. Part number 55240121A. Around £23.

The water temp sensor is on the left side of the horizontal cylinder. Part number 55240131A. It is probably the same as fitted to many a car, so taking it to a motor factors may source you one cheap. They are around £13 at the dealers.

  9. Chrisw you are a star, thank you very much for the PM and the blow up diagram I will do as you suggested, case of elimination will start with the obvious air sensor take it from there
I will report back on this thread.

  10. Hi Dub.
Thank you for your help and the links very interesting reading, and it could turn out to be something more complicated, lets hope not will try easy options first (and cheapest) as I'm almost sure Royston would of seen the fault codes.

  11. Keep us posted :upyeah:

  12. If the air temp sensor was faulty would this show itself on the dash air temp reading ? I'm guessing the sensor feeds both the ECU and the read out on the dash ?

  13. Ordered a new air temperature sensor today will be in on friday can't pick it up till monday and will fit it Tuesdays
meantime I'm in work tomorrow so I'm going to put a clamp on the end of the air temp rubber inlet pipe and cut any cold air getting into it, see if that makes any difference.
I didn't realise I had a air temp reading on the clocks only water temp as far as I was aware.

  14. With the key in the on position, Press the right button on the clocks and the bottom right reading scrolls between charging voltage, air temp and fuel consumption. Press left button for total mileage, trip mileage and lap timer. Press and hold the left button whist switching on ignition and any fault codes stored in the ECU will be displayed.

To reset the trip meter hold down the right button for a few seconds.

  15. Thanks for the info I've just been in the garage to try it out, got the temp reading its showin 8° same as the water temp, that should be normal as bike has been in garage all day, so it's about 8° out in the garage, I will scroll down to temp for my ride into work in the morning.
did the left button hold down turned the ignition on it didn't show any faults.
thanks for the help I will keep this thread up to date.

  16. Well came into work this morning (04:45) bit cold, temp went from 4c (in Garage) to 1/0c on the ride in, didn’t want to play for the hole 20min. ride in at any high speed quite happy to cruse at 69>mph but didn’t like me opening up the throttle, would not play, not sure if this is of any use to me as I still don’t know if the temp gauge was working or not, it was cold but I’m not sure it was down that low but it did adjust from garage temp to outside temp only by putting the new one in will I be able to tell as I have a yard stick now.
    Guvs.
    PS
water temp only got upto 68c average

  17. Went to work this morning (04:45) in Garage temp was 12c rode into work temp went down to 11c on all the journey in, and bike didn't want to play as normal;
However here is the baffling bit, I parked it up in the little parking area I’ve found, out of the wind under a roof next to the generator extractor louvers (if I was homeless that’s where I would live) during my 12 hour shift, and before coming home I checked the air temp before moving off, it was 22c so started with no choke, and within 1 min I’m up on a duel carriageway and the bike is performing perfectly any speed I want, as if “There’s nothing wrong with me” the air temp went down to 11c as was the temp on my ride in but completely two different bikes !!
It will be interesting to see if a new Air temperature sensor (coming on Monday) will make any difference.
Will report back then, I’m not holding my breath that it will be as simple as that.

  18. The latest thought I'd try something, so I attached a breather pipe for want of a better word from the air temp sensor tube diameter fitted perfectly and run the pipe down onto the top of the engine block.

The thought behind this is, if I get the air temp up will the bike work better sooner.

Came into work this afternoon !6:00 ish (Afternoons)

Garage temp on air sensor 12c went down to 11c on the dual carriageway wasn't happy to play on the 5min stretch, the temp stayed at 11c I had to stop for fuel, and it did go up to 13c by the time I road away but soon went back down to 12c and it seemed to work fine only at in town speeds though, so it might not of been at Higher speeds I will never know, by the time I got on the M4 5mins later it was perfect all the way down to work, not sure if this proves anything but just another experiment to see if I can work out why it's playing up as it is.

  19. The whole idea of the air temperature sensor is so the ECU knows how dense the air is and adjust the FI accordingly. As your bike is the 07 does it have servo start?

  20. Keep us posted on this mate please. It sounds quite similar to what i went through recently (and still am really).

Does your's sound and feel like it is misfiring then pops to life all of a sudden as if nothing is wrong?

Mine had similar symptoms and it showed an error of the front coil shorting to earth. Changed that, still the same, the garage i use went through all kinds of tests and it turned out to be the ecu had failed. Got a new one, Chris W flashed it for me and all was well for 3 or so weeks. Now my dash has failed, the garage has said the pcb in there is fried; have a new one on the way.
