OK im gonna kickstart the tyre forum !!!!..........My 06 999R needs new tyres. I purchased the bike last year with very low miles, so its still on original Michelin Pilot Race tyres. The rear is now cooked at 2300 miles. The bike won't be doing track days,.... my own internet ology is leading towards Metzeler Sportec M5 interacts or Pirelli supercorsa SPs ??.......any views or opinions would be greatly appreciated !!!!!
No trackdays on a 999R? Then Michelin PR3s or for something slightly sportier, the Dunlop SportSmarts will be plenty. Or the Pirelli Rosso IIs are also supposed to be good roadies.
I have dunlop sportsmart on the 749, less power i know but on the second set and average 6.5k-7k miles
Was planning on trying these myself on my 916. Do you use them just for road? Interested on your thoughts.
Hi Balmy I got them as I was doing some track days and road riding last year. The main thing for tyres is the bikes suspension set up - I spent time with my mechanic dialing things in right, changing the rear spring etc and the difference it has made has been dramatic on road and track. I have done three track days on this set so far and they have worn amazingly well and very uniformly, they haven't badly scrubbed or ripped up as sometimes happens after a few track days (sometimes after only one!) and have plenty of life left in them. The last track day I did was late October in the rain and they even behaved well then, a couple of slips and slides but still confidence inspiring. We'll see how long they last this year as far as what mileage I get out of them but then I don't worry about that on my 999 much, just give me the super sticky stuff!! Hope that helps!
Bike magazine has a monthly tyre feature and Dunlop Sportsmart, as mentioned above, is their fast-road-and-occasional-track tyre of choice at the moment.
Sorry, after starting this thread i've been absent for a while......Thank you all for your comments, With the aid of a very helpful tyre shop guru, i've decided to step back from supercorsa sp and try the little bit longer life of the Diablo Rosso Corsa, which hopefully will be more than enough for my needs !!........Anyway the deed has been done and only just scrubbed in !!.....feel good but time will tell !!
Ok ! ...have now used Diablo Rosso Corso's enough to state that any man that needs anything more for the road, needs signed up immediatly for the TT !!!!!
