this is a simple one 996 fuel tank was under pressure when I went to fill up today not a normal hiss but enough to push fuel out.. ok breather pipe under filler cap this goes into the fuel but is it connected anywhere else ie pump or is it just hanging around in there ( this is before I yank the bugger out ) also took apart the lock mechanism on the cap making sure that was all clean and ive got a small ball bearing 2mm diameter and also a tiny spring spare lol any ideas where the buggers come from cant find details of them anywhere many thanks in advance
There are two pipes that run from the cap. Breather and overflow. Both are routed internally to the pump base. The come out of the pump base and into a Y piece. From there they run down the LHS of the motor and the pipe ends near the starter. They get crushed quite often under the pump housing.
There are two balls and a spring in the petrol cap that are used to keep the key flap open when you want to access the key slot. If you take the cap apart it's highly likely that they will fly out and after that it's quite a job to get them back in place and the flap secured without them springing out again. The ball bearings are so small that the chances of finding them once they pop out is slim. Looks like you have lost one already. With regard to the breather apart form the advice above check to see the the hoes in the filler neck that the interior tank breather pipes are connected to are not blocked up with rust or dirt.
