Valve Clearance Check, Shim Measure And Adjust

  1. So please confirm so I know I am looking at correct defaults for gaps and am calculating it all right.

Vertical Exhaust Opener (unloaded gap) 0.0035 - Shim size: 0.189 (would I need 0.1885)
    - Factory .004-.005
    Vert Exht closer (loaded 0.006 - unloaded gap) 0.0025 - Shim size:0.235 (would I need 0.2375)
    - Factory .000-.001

Vertical Intake Opener (unloaded gap) 0.0027 - Shim size:0.171 (would I need 0.1697)
    - Factory .004-.005
    Vert Intake closer (loaded 0.0055 - unloaded gap) 0.0028 - Shim size:0.234 (would I need 0.2368)
    - Factory .000-.001

    --------------------------------------------------------

Horizontal Exhaust Opener (unloaded gap) 0.005 - Shim size:0.191 (would I need 0.192)
    - Factory .004-.005
    Hrzt Exh closer (loaded 0.0075 - unloaded gap) 0.0025 - Shim size:0.229 (would I need 0.2315)
    - Factory .000-.001

Horizontal Intake Opener (unloaded gap) 0.003 - Shim size:0.173 (would I need 0.172)
    - Factory .004-.005
    Hrzt Intake closer (loaded 0.007 - unloaded gap) 0.004 - Shim size:0.239 (would I need 0.243)
    - Factory .000-.001

So in short bar Horizontal exhaust opener all are out so all need changing?

Question is looking at current shim size how do I calculate what shim I need? Is it per shim remove/add difference to makeup gap?

  2. Found a nice document online so lets go this way round:

    I have shims:
    Opener - 4.8006mm, 4.3434mm, 4.8514mm, 4.3942mm
    Closer - 5.9690mm, 5.9436mm, 5.8166mm, 6.0706mm

I need shims in range best-worse:
    Opener 4.7879-4.7625mm
    Opener 4.3103-4.2850mm
    Opener 4.8768-4.8514mm
    Opener 4.3688-4.3434mm

    Closer 6.0325-6.0071mm
    Closer 6.0147-5.9894mm
    Closer 5.8801-5.8547mm
    Closer 6.1722-6.1468mm

Anyone has a set we could swap shims about with?

  3. You seem to have measured all your gaps in thousands of an inch (so do I).
The shims come in metric sizes in increments of 0.05mm (.002"). To make the gap smaller you need a thicker shim, to make it larger you need a smaller shim.

I wouldn't try to get the clearances exact but as close as you can within the permitted tolerances.
The vert exh opener is slightly too tight but the next shim down will make it slightly too loose.
The vert inlet opener needs to go one shim size smaller.
The horiz exh opener is ok.
The horiz inlet opener needs one size smaller.

I'd leave all the closers alone except the horiz inlet. Taking it two sizes bigger would probably make it too tight with no clearance so one size would probably be enough. You'll probably find that replacing all the half rings will bring the closers nearer to the ideal .000-001" , apart from that horiz inlet.

I'll leave you to convert all your imperial shim measurements to metric.

  4. Thx Derek, so looking at that:
Vertical Exhaust Opener 0.0035 - Shim size: 0.189 - No change
    - Factory .004-.005
    Vert Exht closer 0.0025 to 0.0005 - Shim size:0.235 to 0.237
    - Factory .000-.001

Vertical Intake Opener 0.0027 to 0.0047- Shim size:0.171 to 0.169
    - Factory .004-.005
    Vert Intake closer 0.0028 to 0.0008 - Shim size:0.234 to 0.236
    - Factory .000-.001

    --------------------------------------------------------

Horizontal Exhaust Opener 0.005 - Shim size:0.191 No Change
    - Factory .004-.005
    Hrzt Exh closer 0.0025 to 0.0005 - Shim size:0.229 to 0.231
    - Factory .000-.001

    Horizontal Intake Opener 0.003 to 0.005 - Shim size:0.173 to 0.171
    - Factory .004-.005
Hrzt Intake closer 0.004 to 0.000- Shim size:0.239 to 0.243
    - Factory .000-.001

  5. Also any idea why there is no aftermarket shim maker that makes them in .001 sizes?

  6. Yes, measuring thous also means you can measure to smaller increments than what's available with metric feelers.
I've gone the oil stone route before and used to do it all the time when necessary. But since I have an excellent shim exchange with my dealer I don't like to send him back shims in weird sizes, so I go as close as I can to the ideal clearances without rubbing down shims. If I can get openers to within ± .001" and closers to .002" or less I'm ok with that.
I used to have a reasonable stock of 2V shims but gave them away with my last bevel 900SS when I sold it 25 years ago. I could have kicked myself some years later on buying a belt 900SS and finding it used the same shims. [IMG]

  7. Quick question I guess I am looking at 8mm half rings and shims?

  8. As per them I need 8mm as I have a 2000 ST2 engine.

I just learned that 695 is 7mm as half rings I have do not fit :(

Do you know how quickly they post?

  9. 2V from DS engines on are 7mm
