I've had a problem this year launching my bike and it could be down to my choice of sprockets. Currently I have a 520 chain conversion running a 14t front and 41t rear, which I thought would give me an advantage. However I think it makes it harder to get a good launch because you have to fight to keep the front end on the deck so I have I think two options. 1. drop the rear by two teeth . 2. go back to 15t on the front. I am leaning to option 2 as it makes the chain run not as tight ,although I'm not sure I have enough chain lenght left to go down this route without further expense. Opinions please commrades.
Peter, you should be adjusting the chain for whichever set up you use, it should not matter if its a 14 or 15 on the front in that respect. I can't remember which bike you have but hopefully this table will help to work out the options and make sure you get the right number of links for whichever combination you end up with Courtesy of Shazaam Also you can work out the ratios on here http://www.gearingcommander.com/
Thanks Denzil (and no offence intended) but I look at that and it means very little to me ,I must be a thicko because figures like that confuse me so my reaction is to give up straight away, sorry :frown: I need to change my gearing anyway because I'm hitting the limiter up a straight,if I change up I'm immediately having to change down for a very quick left/right Your right about the adjustment on my chain,if I go down 2 on the rear I think I need to remove a link ,but I cant remember if I have to remove two for the chain to join correctly. If I go up 1 on the front I may just make the run a fraction tight. I'm just playing this in my head without looking first hand. And the bikes a 999. Cheers.
~Yeah I know that,It was done on purpose to give me max acceleration on my hillclimb events , I only need three gears so wanted big pick up and to be able to run high revs through the corners, there are 8 corners/ changes of direction in a run of 36secs, the idea was to run those high revs because theres less chance of highsiding, but now that I'm far quicker than when I first started I'm hitting the limiter just when I dont want to and am losing a good tenth of a second to 64ft.
Peter, go up to a 15 on the front before you regret it. As it stands your bike is losing 22% of its max speed in each gear against the stock set up. By increasing the front to 15 you will still lose 13% of the Ducati spec top speed in each gear but you are less likely to break the chain and have the front lifting. If you put the numbers into the gearing commander it will tell you theoretical max speeds at the red line in each gear. Your 14/41 means max speed in 1st (at 9750 rpm) 53.4mph, 2nd 74.7 and 3rd 94.1. If you go up to a 15 front the max speeds in each gear will increase to 57.2, 80.0 and 100.9. If you then reduce the rear to 40, speeds in each gear will go up to 58.7, 82 and 103.4. However 15/38 15/39 and 15/40 will all require a 98 link chain. If you cannot get the chain within the swinging arm adjustment range you need to increase/decrease the number of links, don't run it tight. I am glad you mentioned the hill climbing, for a normal road use set up your existing sprockets are mental.
He He thanks Denzil ,I like it when you do my thinking for me , I an going to go back to 15t front and see from there ,thank you.
